Sew,Mama,Sew! Doll Quilt Sew-Along ~ Part 1

Doll Quilt Sew-Along Part 2, Doll Quilt Sew-Along Part 3, Doll Quilt Sew-Along Part 4

Alissa designed an easy and fun Sew-Along for Fat Quarter Month. Welcome to Part 1 of our Sew,Mama,Sew! Doll Quilt Sew-Along.

Today we’ll cut and piece our quilt tops. If you have any questions throughout the sew-along, be sure to visit the Sew-Along area of the forum. Add pics along the way if the mood strikes, either in the forum or in the Sew,Mama,Sew! photo pool.

From Alissa:
I hope you’ll join us in this simple doll quilt sew along!

If you’ve been wanting to tackle quilting, this is a perfect first project to learn all the steps. If you’re a seasoned quilter, perhaps this is an opportunity to try something new. What about using a color combo you don’t usually turn to or trying out a new quilting technique?

The sew along will be broken down into four posts over the course of two weeks. You’ll have plenty of time to keep up and make a cute doll quilt along with us!

Fun!

FQMSA1.jpg

The finished doll quilt.

Breakdown of the sew along:

  • Part 1: Cutting and piecing your quilt top
  • Part 2: Embellishing your quilt top, making your quilt “sandwich”
  • Part 3: Quilting your doll quilt
  • Part 4: Binding your doll quilt

The finished quilt will measure 16” x 19”.

Materials:

  • Variety of fabric for patchwork front – no piece is longer than 16.5”, making this the perfect project for fat quarters!
  • 1 fat quarter for back
  • 18” X 22” of batting
  • 80 inches of binding, or the fabric to make it (about an 1/8 of a yard or half a fat quarter)

Tools:

  • Rotary cutter and mat
  • Basting pins or spray
  • Optional: Walking and/or darning foot for your sewing machine

Part 1: Cutting and piecing your doll quilt top

Use a rotary cutter and mat to cut your fabric.
Cut:

  • 20 3.5” square blocks of different fabrics – choose as many or as few different fabrics as you’d like
  • 2 side border strips of 2.5” x 15.5”
  • 2 top & bottom border strips of 2.5” x 16.5”
  • Lay out your fabric in the design you like.
Ok now that it’s all cut out, let’s start sewing it all together! While piecing the entire quilt top, always sew with a 1/4 inch seam allowance.
Sew the first two blocks, right sides together.
Continue sewing blocks into 5 rows.
Press all of the seams open.
One by one, sew the 5 rows together, taking care that your seams line up, to make up the center of the quilt top. Press all of your seams well.
Sew on the side borders, (the 2 15.5” strips) and then the top and bottom borders (the 16.5” strips).
Again, press all of your seams and you have a completed, cute doll quilt top!

Check back in later this week for the next step: embellishing your quilt top, and making the quilt “sandwich.”

    See you then!

This would be a great first quilt top for children learning to sew. I am thinking it would be a great little piece to try out machine quilting on as well. Time to dig through the stash and see if my girls and I can’t make a couple quilts :)

I need to make one of these for my niece. Sh got a baby doll car seat for Christmas, and she is loving taking the doll for rides in her Barbie jeep (that she got for her summer birthday -not the least bit spoiled *smiles*) So I think I will make it pink, purple, and green to match her jeep.

I love fat quarters! They’re probably the reason I don’t have any full size quilts here at home! Hmmmm…that just gave me an idea-how about a full size quilt made with fat quarter blocks!? OOOhhh! I might just have to try that, to clean out the stash! Love the tutorial!

    53. Bethany responds:
      Posted: February 3rd, 2009 at 7:06 pm →

I have taken on the ambitious project of making a twin size quilt for my daughter. This is my first quilt in a long while, so I am feeling a bit overwhelmed, but very excited. I am excited to see this sew-along as I have wanted the opportunity to try free motion quilting. I will have to do it. Thank you for the encouragement to try something new.

    54. Shanna responds:

I was just going to start my first doll quilt – I thought it would be a good way to learn how to quilt. Thanks for the kick in the pants to get started! I can’t wait to see what everyone comes up with.

    56. Sara responds:
      Posted: February 3rd, 2009 at 8:01 pm →

    59. Sam responds:
      Posted: February 4th, 2009 at 2:44 am →

This is a great tutorial. I’ve never done any quilting so this is a great beginner project for me. Especially since I know someone who needs a quilt for their doll :-)

    60. Esther responds:
      Posted: February 4th, 2009 at 3:12 am →

I’ve only recently discovered the joys of the sewing machine that I bought with good intentions years ago – things always looked so daunting! Thanks to the handmade holidays month – you’ve cured me of that!
This dolls quilt is perfect for trying out new skills on! It’s not the piecing that puts me off quilts – its being brave enough to sew squiggles all over the quilt that scares the life out of me!! Looking forward to the final tutorial….

    61. Mirza responds:
      Posted: February 4th, 2009 at 5:51 am →

I am loving this tutorial!!!! What a great idea. Looking forward to giving it a try!

I have been wanting to do some quilting since the new year started, but the idea of making a big quilt just set me back from doing it. I think I am going to join this doll quilt along and make a couple for my twin nieces.

I think I am going to get my 4 year old to pick out some squares from my scraps and see what we can make for his “buddies”.

Yes, I’ve wanted to do a quilt for ages but didn’t know where to start. Haven’t got fat quarters but I’m going to use fabric from my daughter’s old clothes. It would be great to have a guide on choosing colours – I have no idea on what will go with what.
