We’re hosting a swap this month, we’re talking stash and we’re giving away fat quarter packs all month long. Comment anytime this week to win one of 8 fat quarter packs (6 fat quarters per pack). This week’s FQ giveaway pack prints are predominantly… Orange! (Don’t forget comments are also still open for Free Fabric Friday through Monday morning.)

Y’know, I’ve never actually been brave enough to buy a fat quarter – people who know about them always seem to know so much about sewing, I’ve felt strangely intimidated! Maybe following this week I’ll be braver..

Orange – wonderful! Colour of pumpkins, halloween, paw paw, desert sand, mango, turmeric, saffron, burnt toffee, the harvest moon and the welcoming glow from night-lit houses. Could anything give you a warmer feeling? It’s my favourite colour in the world. I think I’m inspired to make a new orange pillow to celebrate.

I really liked the log cabin pillow tutorial. http://www.jcarolinecreative.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Store_Code=JC&Screen=BASPILLOW This is a link to a pattern calculator for constructing pillow backs that I use. I keep envisioning lots of pillow covers to change up the entire look of the Living Room without having to repaint etc.

It’s amazing to see what a difference a new pillow (or two) can do to a drab, winter weary room. I just added one to my bedroom and maybe if I win some new fat quarters, I can add a few to my great room.

  64. Keri responds:

I’m not typically a fat quarter purchaser but more a yard purchaser—-and more if I love the fabric. I mean, I want to be ready to sew anything (short of a bedding).
Orange is a family favorite color since we’re Dutch! Everyone always wonders why we deck out in Orange on 30 April and wish we were part of the crowds celebrating in Amsterdam.

  66. Michelle responds:
    Posted: February 1st, 2009 at 10:41 am →

Ooh! Love that FQ pillow – great idea and so simple!

Ohh, I heart fat quarters! I’m afraid of fabric commitment, so I’ve found that fat quarters are a girl’s best friend! I’m totally going to make some pillows for my guest room. (I have a pale green silk duvet in there, so it’s essentially a blank canvas.)

And, I just started to make the Pin Cushion Caddy from Anna Marie Horner’s “Seams to Me” last night. I picked up a bundle of brown FQs for 40 percent off the other day and am using them! Can’t wait for it to be finished.

Is it weird that I’ve never sewn with a fat quarter before? I sew a lot, and quilt, but I usually try to thrift or recycled my materials. If something is free, though, well, that’s a diferent story…

oh i’m a HUGE fat quarter fan, and our local sewing store just doesn’t have the selection that I’d like…. but I’m loving to see what you do with them! I made a reversible purse for me and a tiny one for my daughter the other day out of two fat quarters… it was so much fun!

Wow, this is fantastic. I am a great gatherer and horder of fat quarters, but can never come up with that ‘perfect’ project in which to use them. Thanks, Sew Mama!

What amazing and colorful inspiration these pillows are! Most of them look rather difficult to make but I am definitely going to try and make one this week. I have never done free-form quilting so a small project like this would be a good place to start.

I am so happy you are having a fat quarter month, this is also my birthday months so that means some extra cash to buy more fat quarters. I love that you can get really expensive fabric in a fat quarter at a great price.

That pillow is something my grand daughter who is 10 will be making and she is really thrilled to see colors like that. So bright and yet so sophisticated. Never thought of using the color combo like that. Her and I will be shopping for fabrics that will make a statement like the orange, yellow and turquoise. PERFECT
