Fat Quarter Swap

We’re hosting a Fat Quarter Swap! You can send off some favorites and get something new, fun and different in return. We all love good mail, right?

Here’s how it will work: You send us your name and address.  We’ll put you in a group with four other people.  Send each of them 1 fat quarter and they’ll send one to you.  You’ll get 4 new fat quarters!

Remember, a fat quarter is 18″ x 22″.  Since you’re sending out 4 fat quarters, you could (but don’t have to) cut up a yard and send out the 4 pieces.  (Make sure you cut it correctly.  See this post.)  Fabrics should be 100% cotton. (How can you tell? You can cut a tiny sliver of the fabric and burn it with a match. Cotton will leave an ash residue. Polyester or nylon fibers in fabric will leave you with some “chunks” of residue.)  Also, we hope that you will share something pretty, bold or cute–not just the print that you inherited from your grandma (although vintage fabric can be wonderful!).  You know what we’re saying.

We welcome our friends all around the world!  Let us know whether or not you want to swap internationally, or just in your country.  We’ll do our best to make it work.

Email: kristin@sewmamasew.com
Subject: Swap
Include:

  1. Your name
  2. Your blog name and url (if any)
  3. Email address (We know that we can get it from the email, but it’s easier for us if it is in the body.)
  4. Your address
  5. One swap or two (sending 4 FQs or 8)?
  6. Are you willing to ship internationally?  (Depending on the destination, shipping might be $2–$3.)

Swap sign-ups will remain open until 5:00 p.m. on Friday (2-13-09). We’ll email you with the addresses of your swap group within one week. (If there is a chance that you won’t be able to follow through, please don’t sign up. Four people will be counting on you. We’ll have another chance for you to play in the future!) Ready?  Set?  Swap!

  18. Oceanpeg/Peggy responds:
    Posted: February 10th, 2009 at 9:19 am →

Another way I learned how to tell if fabric is cotton well over 50 years ago is to hold a section of it in your hand and squeeze it into a ball and hold it there for a few seconds, at least for a slow ten count. Then, let it go and take a good look at it. Did it wrinkle up? Cotton wrinkles up and most other fabrics, including polyester, hardly wrinkle at all. If you do this quite often you should learn how to and be able to tell the difference between cotton and other fabrics and you won’t have to play with matches….. Peggy

After reading this post, I went back to check out What is a Fat Quarter, which evidently I somehow missed. Very interesting. I’ve always wondered what exactly a fat quarter was!! Now I know…and interesting, too, that you can get more 5″ charms from one.

  20. Carla responds:
    Posted: February 10th, 2009 at 9:50 am →

Wonderful! I am a fat quarter junkie. I buy 3 or 4 every time I go to the quilt store and that’s often LOL

  21. Shannon responds:
    Posted: February 10th, 2009 at 9:58 am →

How exciting!! I’ve sent my info & can wait!

  22. Nikki responds:
    Posted: February 10th, 2009 at 10:37 am →

This is a terrific idea! What’s great about it is that beginners and experienced crafters can exchange fabric; it’s not one of those swaps where people are intimidated to make something or don’t participate because they don’t know how to make something. Plus, it doesn’t really require any time. How could you not participate?

  23. Rebecca responds:
    Posted: February 10th, 2009 at 10:41 am →

Perhaps a crazy question, but what is the best way to ship the fat quarters? Anyone know the approximate cost?

  24. Terriaw responds:
    Posted: February 10th, 2009 at 10:47 am →

Yay, these are so fun! I especially love doing these swaps with someone from outside the US to see what else is available out there in the rest of the world.

When I started sewing, not too long ago, I heard about swaps and was wondering where I would find information about them, but I’ve found SO many, it’s ridiculous, and now I’m completely obsessed. I love it! Thanks for fuelling the obsession and organizing another one! :D

This is a great swap idea. This is the first swap I’ve taken part in. As a novice sewer, I never felt good enough about my skills to swap things I made, but I don’t need sewing confidence for this :) I’m definitely going to go the cutting-route. The FQ in my Hancock Fabrics are rather simple.

  90. Dorrie responds:
    Posted: February 12th, 2009 at 8:25 pm →

How exciting! I love all of your ideas! Count me in!

  91. Kimberly responds:
    Posted: February 12th, 2009 at 10:21 pm →

Love it! I signed up for two. I aid I would ship internationally for one, so hopefully I can send out some fun American designer prints and get some get international fabrics back. (Maybe some Japanese prints…) :)

Not to be a negative-nellie but, are there any nets in place for those people who might sign up and not follow through? Are their partners just going to be left high and dry or what?

  92. Trinity responds:
    Posted: February 13th, 2009 at 4:40 am →

    How fun, I’m in!!!

  93. Annie responds:
