iPod/Camera Cozy Tutorial
Rebecca works in the Sew,Mama,Sew! shop; she sends off your fabrics and patterns, and falls in love with new collections. Rebecca designs aprons and more for her Lula Dahl shop and she blogs about her creative work too. Today she has an iPod and/or Camera Cozy Tutorial for you to use two more fat quarters!
From Rebecca:

1. What you’ll need:
|
![]() |
![]() |
2. Cut one 14″ x 5″ strip of each fabric and batting. |
![]() |
![]() |
3. Place the main fabric wrong side down on top of the batting and set it aside. |
![]() |
![]() |
4. Find the center of the lining fabric (ignore the fact that in the picture, it shows my main fabric!) by folding it in half on the 5″ side. That is where you’ll want to sew your elastic. Fold your piece of elastic in half and place it with the loop on the fabric and the ends of the elastic sticking off the edge. You’ll need to adjust how big you want your loop depending on the size of your button. Hold it in place or pin it and stitch it using a narrow 1/4″ seam allowance. |
![]() |
![]() |
5. Stack the fabric: Batting on the bottom; main fabric right side up; lining right side down. |
![]() |
![]() |
6. Pin around the sides leaving a 2.5″ gap in the middle of the 5″ side on the opposite end of where you sewed the elastic. This is where you’ll pull the fabric through to turn it right side out. |
![]() |
![]() |
7. Using a 1/4″ seam allowance, sew all the way around the outer edge leaving your 2.5″ gap open. Don’t forget to back stitch at the beginning and end! |
![]() |
![]() |
8. Clip the ends of the elastic so that it is even with your fabric. |
![]() |
![]() |
9. Carefully cut the edge of the batting as close to the seam as possible without cutting your fabric or the stitching. This will help get rid of some of the bulk when you’re top stitching later. Trimming your corners will also help with the bulk. |
![]() |
![]() |
10. Turn right side out. You’ll want to use a turning tool to help with the corners. I find a thick knitting needle works well. 11. Iron the edges of your case being careful not to iron over the elastic. (It will melt your elastic.) |
![]() |
![]() |
12. Fold the edges of your opening inward and pin it in place so that the edges match up. |
![]() |
![]() |
13. Top stitch all the way across the 5″ side with the opening very close to the edge. |
![]() |
![]() |
14. Face the case vertically with the lining facing up and the elastic loop at the top. Starting from the bottom, measure 5″ and fold toward the elastic loop at the five inch mark. Match up your edges and pin in place. |
![]() |
![]() |
15. Starting at the bottom right corner (where the red pen is pointing), top stitch the right side, the top and the left side until you reach the bottom left corner. Don’t stitch over the bottom fold. |
![]() |
![]() |
16. I like to back stitch where the “pocket” ends (where the red pen is pointing) to secure it in place and give it a little more strength.17. After you’ve top stitched, fold your flap down and iron it in place. Remember not to iron over the elastic. Wherever your loop falls is where you’ll want to place the button. |
Hooray! You’re done!

I’ve wanted to make something like this for a while now and this makes it look so easy!
Rebecca, these are precious. I knitted a cover for ipod and or camera. It has a long
shoulder strap. I think this is much cuter and faster. Plus if you want to keep it in your purse
you don’t have to deal with the straps. I love the fabric you picked out!
I made one for my son and made a button hole( with my machine) in the bottom of the fold so that his earphones could be plugged in, ( I know I got the idea from somewhere on the internet…..thank you to that person, wish I could give them credit). It’s a nice touch and he can put it in his pocket!
You could make quite a few of these from 2 FQs – great tutorial!
Oh my gosh, I NEED one of these for my cell phone. Thanks for this – I might have to make it this afternoon before I throw my phone loose in my carry-on when we fly to FL tomorrow and scratch it all up
i really need to try this, i love organized gadgets!
This is such a cute idea!! A cute camera/ipod case is SO hard to find…I can’t wait to make myself one!
Love these fabrics and that the pouch is multi-functional. It seems perfect for passports, reshaped for sunglasses, etc. Fun project!
I so happy. This is exactly the project I was looking for. I went on vacation & lost my camera case. I think I left it in the rental car. I’ve been browsing patterns & trying to decide on a simple camera case to make. Thank you! I can’t wait for the fabric to get here to make it!!
Very cute and looks easy!
This is such a fab tute, and I love that fabric! Holy yum! I need a little something to protect my ipod…but I need some super-cute fabric to make a little cozy for it.
Another great idea. Thanks.
These are so cute! I am going to make one for my camera – thanks for the tutorial!
I might make it just a bit bigger for a DS case. We just have a boring black one!
Great gift idea!!!
I made one using one of the other tutorials your site had listed…this one is great too! Now if only i had an iPod…
very cute – this is such a great tutorial!
I can see extending the length of the pattern and putting batting on both sides to make an eyeglass or sunglasses case as well!
I’ve needed something for my camera – what a cool project!
Another great fat quarter idea…this one is great. I can use gal or guy fabrics and everyone will be happy. Thank you for the ideas!
Ooh, I should totally make one (or five) of these!
Thanks for this tutorial. I can think of lots of uses for this pattern.
My fiance has been badgering me to make him something like this for while now.
This would be perfect for a flip video. The “case” that comes with it protects from scratches, but wears out pretty quick.
I love the fabric…wouldn’t that be beautiful for a camera???
You have been Awarded! Check it out! http://babasfarmlife.blogspot.com/
Great tutorial – can’t wait to try it! Thank you
This is great! I can think of a few things I have that need a little padded case! It’s on my list now!
I have had a similar tutorial saved on my favorites for a while now. This one is so cute. Love the fabric choices.
These are so cute. I am going to have to make some for my teenage nieces. Thank you.
I don’t need one of these for an iPod, but I can think of a lot of other small electronics that would fit in such a cute pouch.
Guess what I’m going to make this weekend-I was looking for a small, quick project and here it is! Thanks for sharing.
My camera is going to be so thankful. I am too. Love it- can’t wait to make one!
Wonderful tutorial, I was just looking for something like that for my new camera!
I have been wanting to sew something practical and quick and this fits the bill! You make it look so easy, thank you!!
This would be perfect for my kids’ Nintendos too! Thanks a bunch!
What a great, easy idea!
oh boy! now i’ll have a case that will actually fit my off brand mp3 player!
Very cute! Great fabric choices too.
Thanks this is great.
going to make one for my sisters birthday right now….
This could be useful for my GPS system too. I usually just put it in the armrest of my car, but it would be nice to have a case for it. Thanks for the great tutorial!
Anna
Great project made with beautiful fabric! I love little projects that are stylish and soooo practical!
Great idea and tutorial! Love the fabric.
My daughter would love one of these to coordinate with her new bag.
I love pouches, sacks, totes and anything like a purse. I could use this for my camera but could also use it for other little items too.
again, GORGEOUS fabric! This might be a good idea for my chipped nano!
Great tutorial! Thank you so much!
How cool, I know what I ‘m making for my camera this weekend.
What a great gift for a friend! I have some antique buttons that would be great to use too! thanks!
Thank you!
I LOVE it ! I’m trying it this weekend for a friend of mine, I’m sure she’ll be happy with it! And of course, I’m doing one for me too!! Thanks for the tutorial, Rebecca!
love this! Thank you! Will be making for ipod, phone and gifts.
This is perfect! I just bought a new camera and need a case for it. Thanks!
Neat! I could see many uses for this pouch. I love the fabric!
Love the fabric used in this project.
I love this! I’m going to make one for my TomTom, and my iPod, and my camera…
If I only had an ipod!
This is so cute. What a great idea.
Cuter than those leather cases camera’s come in.
I love this.
Great tutorial! I made a similar case, but horizonal, for my cell phone. =]
just got an iPod, so this comes to me at the right time!
xo
This is a great tutorial and so useful Thank you for providing it. I will be making matching ones for my camera and ipod.
My old camera is a little too chunky for this sleeve, but the project is great inspiration!
Fantastic idea! Thank you for the tutorial.
so cute! I love the pink fabric and it coordinates really well with the blues.
thanks for another great tutorial!
these are so cute!
I will start on this next week for my camera. Thanks!
Just the thing I need – my keys have scratched so many things in the past that I’ve been keeping my iPod in a sock to protect it. This is much more attractive!
Love the fabric. Thanks for the instructions. Pictures help so much.
This idea opens up a lot of possibilities for me! Love it.
What a great idea- I definitely need to make one of these for my camera so it doesn’t get banged up whenever I put it in my purse. Thanks for sharing!
great idea!
In don’t have an I pod, but I could sure use something for my new mp3 player! Thanks for the tutorial!
My iPod already has a really nice leather pouch but I think my cell phone could really do with a nice cozy =)
Super cute – and I love the fabrics. This one is definitely bookmarked!
Complete!

Thanks for the easy & cute tutorial! I made one to hold our GPS.
I just finished mine! Turned out great however I adjusted the size to fit my iPod touch. You can see the results on my blog: http://comeandseetheseitz.wordpress.com/2009/03/08/and-the-winner-is/
I *just* finished making one of these! It was super easy and now my camera isn’t cold anymore! Thanks a ton for an easy camera cozy.
Thank you ever so much for this tutorial, I just finished. I decided to make mine with a button, and mastered the buttonhole foot on my sewing machine for the first time!
This is great! I can totally use this as a base for the kids Nintendo DS. And it’s sooo easy! I could even sew in a pouch for their games! Fabulous idea! Thanks.
Now I’m off to check out Rebecca’s blog.
I recently bought a smaller camera for my purse. This liitle cozy will be perfect! Thanks for the tutorial.
Hey, great post, really well written. You should post more about this.
Love this easy tutorial. I’ve been trying to fine tune my weak attempt of creating one. Yours is much better concieved than mine. I’ve made 3 as thank you qifts.
Thank you for this tutorial. I had a problem with closing such bags, now I can see clearly…
Alright, it took AGES… but I did it! Thank you so much! Your tuturial helped alot
Great tutorial!!!Congratulations!!!I posted a link to it on my blog at http://feltroaholic.blogspot.com
Thank you very much!!!
Carine
Made this for my new iPhone to lessen the feeling that I was always about to drop/maim/destroy it… It took no time at all, and I LOVE it -used some orange and turquoise Amy Butler Kashmir and it looks professional (which I am definitely not). Great tutorial; going to make some for stocling stuffers
I made one of these today and I absolutely LOVE it! I used what I had on hand so I did a little different on the closure. I used satin cord instead of the elastic and then a fancy jewel button to finish. I think it matches well considering the material. I also used the same material for the inside and out, since, again, I used what I had here already. I plan to make many more. Thank you!
Super cute! I just made a GPS cover and should have done something like this rather than the box type cover I made. Thanks for the idea.
This tutorial is well-explained. It’s super easy even for a beginner like me. Thank you so much!
I made one of these covers for my Itouch tonight. It turned out really cute. Not as perfect as yours but, still cute.
I love this project – I’ve got fabric ready to go I just need to get some time at my machine.
I know this is old, but could you tell me what the polka dot fabric is? My daughter fell in love with the pink Amy Butler fabric at the quilt shop and I bought some to make her a dress and that pola dot would be perfect for the ruffle! (I know, long shot being able to find any, but you never know!)
Hey this is awesome!! I made one using a piece of fleece in the inside because I didn’t have any batting. Great for a beginner, quick & rewarding when complete:)
see mine at: http://scraplikecrazy.blogspot.com/2010/01/new-phone-holder.html
But remember – I was an upholsterer and don’t like to iron all of my seams. haha!
I just made this cell phone sleeve for my teenage niece. The steps and pictures you gave made it very easy to make. I decided to use velcro circles instead of the elastic and button, just because I did not have elastic on hand. Thanks so much for posting this tutorial.
Just what I was looking for.. Thanks very much for taking the time to share this!
