June 1 ~ Make It, Wear It! Inspiration

Sewn by Yoshimi, Yoshimi the Flying Squirrel
Every day this month we’ll share one of our favorite pieces of clothing, providing detail about the pattern and design so you can easily move from inspiration to sewing your own favorite new piece of clothing! Learn more about Yoshimi’s amazing dress on her blog. Yoshimi also shared some pattern details with us here:
Pattern: KWIK SEW 3489 (jersey dress)
Material: rayon jersey with polyurethane blend
Pattern Alteration Note: One simple but major dramatic alteration had been applied on the hem. The hemline, which was originally rounded, was straightened flat to achieve the more urbane look (as the print of this fabric looked quite inorganic and I thought the rounded hem wouldn’t go well with the print).
Fabric Note: I recommend very soft fabrics for better results, but I warn anybody to be sure of the size at the same time. The product could be very large even though one has read the sizing chart correctly. I guess that the combination of a soft stretchy jersey + smaller size on this pattern would give a very good result, after my experience.

I am so excited for this challenge!! I love to sew clothes so I am anxious to learn new tips!
I love the dress flattering shape. I’m just starting to sew clothes and the challenge is definitely inspiring!
Sassy!
I love this challenge! I’m excited to get sewing! The more that I can learn, the better my clothes will turn out.
Clothes making is my big challenge when sewing, so this should be great.
I am excited to hear about fabric selections people make. I have a really hard time knowing what is the right fabric for a particular pattern- especially since I have to buy my fabric online with no (quality) fabric stores in the area.
I’m just starting to sew for myself. Self-drafted and copies of some well-fitting clothing is what I’ve done so far, but I’d like to learn how to sew from a pattern.
Looking forward to this challenge!
Your June theme sounds awesome, I’ve never tried making clothes for myself!
cute dress!
cute!!!!!
i have wanted a wrap dress for SO long! i just bought some jersey…now, off to get the pattern! this one is a must!
I’m really excited about the theme this month. I love sewing clothing! I need pattern ideas!!
The dress is beautiful!
I am getting back into sewing, being away from it for so long. I always sewn clothes when I was in high school and loved it. This challenge will motivate me to sew more often.
what a great challenge, I’m all in!
Great dress! I love jersey knits – so comfy!
beautiful dress and truly inspirational. Last year I made a skirt when we did this but it didn’t turn out very good so I think I’m going to re-purpose that fabric.
Love love love it!!!
Lovely dress! I sew clothing more than anything else (I just blogged a skirt, and now I’m working on… well, I haven’t decided. Either a hand-embroidered “Ocean” dress, turning a men’s dress shirt into a dress, a few knit tops, or… we’ll see). I’m excited for this month!
Looks like a comfy dress!
Cute! I will have to pull out my fabric bin and stitch something up!
I am super excited about this month at SMS! What a great kick off. I cannot wait to start sewing my own clothes.
what an awesome dress!!
The dress looks beautiful!
I really appreciate all the notes about using this pattern. I have had trouble in the past with too-large garments from patterns cut to a size selected according to my measurements. Thanks!
I love the dress. Now I want to learn to sew clothes too.
That’s a gorgeous dress! Might have to try it!
love it.
I love Yoshimi’s blog! This dress is adorable — I just did a muslin for my first knit dress. It was super easy but I do wish the Vogue pattern I used had a little more info on seam and edge finishes for knits. Some of them weren’t finished at all, which I think looks pretty tacky.
I’m wondering how much of a smaller size you should use if you are using a stretch jersey for this dress? Not quite sure how to make a change like that…. Thanks for the inspiration though!
This is going to be such a fun month!
I really want to find the time to make myself a dress!! this one’s beautiful.
I love sewing clothes for myself although haven’t done as much lately as I’d like too! I’m in dire need of some new dresses, skirts and tops though to get me through the next few months of my pregnancy! Time to hit the fabric shops and pattern books I think! I love the Kwik Sew dress shown… I wonder if it would be a good post pregnancy dress?!?
This is gorgeous! I definitely need to start sewing clothes!
Beautiful job, and as someone looking to start sewing knits I appreciate the tip!
Oh, I am so excited for this month!
Now that is super cute!
Beautiful dress, but I’m dying to know about the shoes! Where can I get those shoes?!!!
Cute dress!
Wow, I love the flow of the skirt!
Lovely dress. I love wrap style dresses but this one might be out of my league.
I have just started sewing clothing. I look forward to the inspiration.
very cool dress for the kick-off!
I am really inspired by this challenge. I am getting back in the mood of sewing clothes. This is excellent timing for me to get moving! Thanks!!!
So very cute! I may just have to make one!
Wraparound dresses are great, they always fit.
It’s a lovely dress. I specially like the contrasting fabric peeking out.
I can’t wait to see the items this month. I’ve been on a make-it-for-myself kick too and just finished a shirt last night…does that count??? I’ll upload it this week after I get it washed and ready to wear.
That dress is amazing, I love how the lining peeks through!
I’m glad Yoshimi gave details about her experience, especially the sizing. Those things are always great to know before starting a new project!
she looks great in this dress. its beautiful.
That’s beautiful… my sister would look spectacular in that!
Nice dress.
This is gonna be a great month!
Would like to see some skirts and maybe a ruffle shirt!!
I’m really hoping this month inspires me to make some of the garments I’ve had in my head for so long!
Like Yoshimi’s dress lots.
i love this dress. is it possible to sew knits with my regular machine?
Oh wow! The dress is so pretty, thanks for sharing!
That would be perfect for my daughters! Maybe even myself if I am feeling adventurous.
I love that the lining is also patterned rather than solid
So cute!
Excellent tip about sizing and stretch of fabric. Thanks! I look forward to more inspiration posts!
I really should do more sewing for myself. Sigh!
I love this dress, but if I made it I’d have to spin everywhere instead of walking just to show off the lining.
That is SO cute! I love the fabric!
Y’all would do this in June, when I won’t be able to get in my sewing room much, wouldn’t you?!
Will do my best to play along!
This is such a gorgeous dress – I can see me wearing it everywhere! Must track down that pattern. Thanks!
I love the fabric!
Love the movement of the dress!
Beautiful dress. Looking forward to a fun month.
Wow, nice drees.
What a great challenge! I really need to make some things for myself so it’s the perfect inspiration!
Cute dress. I love knit dresses!
Love the dress!
Beautiful, I love the twirling it allows
I started sewing so I could make some clothes for myself and I’ve been too nervous to actually attempt any clothing yet. Hopefully this month’s challenge will be the push I need!
absolutely lovely!
Thanks for the challenge idea! I’m getting back into sewing after a looong hiatus & this will be just the kickstart I needed!
This will motivate me to sew something for myself for once!
I have not yet sewed myself a dress that has fit me properly – this one is beautiful and inspires me to keep on trying! Looking forward to a great month!
So Cute!
making clothing for myself scares me. I am always worried it would look handmade and not be well…perfect…lol…I guess I need to get over being like that!
That dress is really pretty – great inspiration

I need a new sewing machine badly! Mine went on the fritz
I don’t sew clothes very often, especially for myself. I might have to give it a try.
I’ve got a couple items I was gonna make anyways. This should push me to do it! Thanks
maybe this will give me the push i need to make something for myself!
My two favorite things, jersey and a wrap dress!
I hardly ever sew clothes for myself but the raincoat pattern from Amy Butler is tempting me.
Hooray! Just the inspiration I need to sew that skirt I’ve been planning for months!
This is such a great idea, I can’t wait to start sewing some clothes!
I’m not brave enough to make a dress yet but I have the pattern pieces cut out for a top. And I want a new skirt too, so…
This dress is so pretty – love the way it flows
Love this dress. if I wasn’t 7 months pregnant I might give it a try. Maybe next year.
it’s so inspiring to see what others are making!
Cute! Thanks for the review!!
I’m so excited to learn more about making clothing – I’ve been timid about this and it’s time for me to get over it!
Thanks for the incentive to sew something for myself!
beautiful dress! Maybe time to dust off the sewing machine again
Great dress! I’ve been sewing a long time but have avoided knits. I’m pushing myself to conquer them, which will only happen if I work with them until I’m comfortable. This looks like a good pattern choice to start with. Thanks for sharing!
hmmm…what to make. thanks for the inspiration
What a stunning dress. Gorgeous fit and drape.
This is the perfect opportunity to give me the time to make something for myself.

So excited for this month! I have a whole stash full of things that need to be used!
Exciting! I hope I find the time to participate!
This is just a great idea – I have not made anything for me wear since I was about 16 so this could just be the kick in the arse I require!!! I’ll be sure to head back over. x
This sounds like it will be such a fun month! Thank you!
Here’s hoping to work through my mountain of fabric this month!
This dress is beautiful! I could live in wrap dresses but I’ve never made one. Maybe this month!
This is just the challenge I need! I haven’t sewn anything for myself in awhile. Thanks for doing this!

Beautiful dress! Great topic too!
Cool, I’ve sewn two dresses for myself this year so far, and have four more lined up, I’m loving garment construction!
What a wonderful inspiration peice! I’ve just bought some beautiful jersey and am trying to be brave enough to cut into it….

This Yoshimi’s dress look so fabulous.. great job.
Beautiful dress!
I’ve got this beautiful vintage fabric from a thrift shop and I’ve been secretly dreaming on make something for myself (I’m a novice, I only made clothes and other decorating stuff for my kids). Maybe this is just the challenge I need to fulfill this old dream!
This challenge was made for me! Have decided to put in the time and seriously upgrade my wardrobe. So glad I get to do it along with SMS

I love that dress! It would be great if Sew, Mama, Sew carried more of these fabrics like rayons and knits for fun and comfy clothes.
Great theme this month – i’m excited
I hope to see lots of dresses… that’s what I’m into sewing now too.
I cant wait to try this
I love wrap dresses and I like the width of the ties. Nice alteration.
Great dress! I have always been wary of sewing with knit fabrics maybe it is time to overcome the fear.
love the dress! I wonder how I should start making my first ‘make it wear it’? …if I should go attend a class first or just get a pattern and jump into the deep end of the pool all alone!!! yikes!
Very cute! Great photo, too!
Great challenge! And wonderful dress!
I hope I can try!
That dress is sooooo nice! Makes me want to find a dress to twirl
It is lovely, though it looks like it fits skinny ones
Beautiful!
This dress is AMAZING!
So maybe this month I’ll put together that peasant blouse I’ve been wanting for a couple years. The fabric is read and embroidered.
