June 1 ~ Make It, Wear It! Inspiration

MIWIInspiration61.jpg title=

Sewn by Yoshimi, Yoshimi the Flying Squirrel

Every day this month we’ll share one of our favorite pieces of clothing, providing detail about the pattern and design so you can easily move from inspiration to sewing your own favorite new piece of clothing! Learn more about Yoshimi’s amazing dress on her blog. Yoshimi also shared some pattern details with us here:

Pattern: KWIK SEW 3489 (jersey dress)

Material: rayon jersey with polyurethane blend

Pattern Alteration Note: One simple but major dramatic alteration had been applied on the hem. The hemline, which was originally rounded, was straightened flat to achieve the more urbane look (as the print of this fabric looked quite inorganic and I thought the rounded hem wouldn’t go well with the print).

Fabric Note: I recommend very soft fabrics for better results, but I warn anybody to be sure of the size at the same time. The product could be very large even though one has read the sizing chart correctly. I guess that the combination of a soft stretchy jersey + smaller size on this pattern would give a very good result, after my experience.

I am excited to hear about fabric selections people make. I have a really hard time knowing what is the right fabric for a particular pattern- especially since I have to buy my fabric online with no (quality) fabric stores in the area.

  7. Sonya M responds:

I’m just starting to sew for myself. Self-drafted and copies of some well-fitting clothing is what I’ve done so far, but I’d like to learn how to sew from a pattern.
    Looking forward to this challenge!

beautiful dress and truly inspirational. Last year I made a skirt when we did this but it didn’t turn out very good so I think I’m going to re-purpose that fabric.

Lovely dress! I sew clothing more than anything else (I just blogged a skirt, and now I’m working on… well, I haven’t decided. Either a hand-embroidered “Ocean” dress, turning a men’s dress shirt into a dress, a few knit tops, or… we’ll see). I’m excited for this month!

  29. Amy Hodge responds:

I love Yoshimi’s blog! This dress is adorable — I just did a muslin for my first knit dress. It was super easy but I do wish the Vogue pattern I used had a little more info on seam and edge finishes for knits. Some of them weren’t finished at all, which I think looks pretty tacky.

  30. Elizabeth responds:
    Posted: June 1st, 2010 at 8:31 am →

I’m wondering how much of a smaller size you should use if you are using a stretch jersey for this dress? Not quite sure how to make a change like that…. Thanks for the inspiration though!

I’m in dire need of some new dresses, skirts and tops though to get me through the next few months of my pregnancy! Time to hit the fabric shops and pattern books I think! I love the Kwik Sew dress shown… I wonder if it would be a good post pregnancy dress?!? :)
