Welcome to Sewing Machine Month on the Sew,Mama,Sew! blog! We’ll learn more about sewing machine components (feet, feet, feet, buttonholes, needles, etc.). We have a fantastic sewing machine cover tutorial, interviews, we’ll explore decorative stitches, we’ll talk about older (workhorse!) machines and much more. Today we’re kicking off a Sewing Machine Meme. Deirdre from Hampton, VA sent us an email awhile back with the idea for “machine interviews” when she found herself overwhelmed with the process of sewing machine research online. This is a great idea. I bought my first sewing machine in March and there were very few reviews out there, though there was some advice on what to look for when you’re buying a machine. I ended up with a Babylock Grace and I love it, but this will be a fabulous resource when it’s complete for possible future machines!
I feel like I don’t know enough about my machine, so hopefully this month will not only inform me but encourage me to get to know it better! =)

I’m looking forward to reading about what machines others have. Eventually I’ll be upgrading and what a great way to discover the pro and cons of them by other sewers!
I have 10 machines and they all work: 2 Berninas, 3 Singers, 3 Whites, 1 Janome, 1 Necchi. One of my Berninas was super expensive and the Necchi I found for $12. One of my Whites has a left aligned needle position which I have never seen before. What I use: I got my Quilters Edition Janome 2 years ago and it is by far my favorite machine. Sews like a dream, drop-in bobbin, plenty of extra stitches, up/down needle option. I sew everything and have been sewing for…cough, cough…40 years. I’ve made lots of quilts, doll clothes, swimsuits and underwear, shirts and ties for my husband, clothes for my kids and grandkids. Right now I love making things that don’t have fitting issues! Bags, aprons, quilts, potholders, capris, tees, sundresses. I had to think a bit but there is nothing that drives me nuts about this machine. I sew a lot and it is my dream machine. I consider myself a Sewing Machine Rescue Unit! I love to find old fantastic machines and reviving them. My Janome’s name is Belle.
This is great i have had my machine for a few months now i’m still fairly new to sewing so dont know if my review would be much help to anyone but i guess there is no harm so will blog about it.

I have two sewing machines:
My Old Sewing Machine:
1. Kenmore, 385 series
2. I have had the sewing machine for 14 years
3. It cost about $200 to $300 at the time, from Sears.
4. I sewed absolutely everything on the machine! Handbags, quilts, teddy bears, crafts, you name it.
5. I would sew in short bursts of about a month or so on this machine, and they it would sit for a month or two. Recently, I have been sewing quilts, and it has gotten daily use.
6. This was a wonderful starter machine! It was sturdy, easy to use, fun and very reliable. I have been very happy with the Kenmore brand, and it is still going strong after 14 years!
7. The beginner Kenmore models have simple features and just enough stitches to keep the creativity flowing. I bought a generic walking foot and free motion foot, which have added to the functions. It also has a free arm and a pretty large throat area, so it is good for both sewing clothes and quilts.
8. The Kenmore is a mechanical machine, so it can be a little clunky. You definitely need to keep it free from lint or it gets sluggish and noisy.
9. I got this sewing machine for my 13th birthday, and it is still one of the best presents I have ever received!
10. This is a great machine for beginners who want something simple and sturdy.
11. Make sure the machine is reliable, easy to use, and will grow with you as your sewing skills improve.

New Sewing Machine:
1. Janome 4900 QC
2. I’ve owned it for less than a month!
3. It was about $800 – $900 (I waited for a sewing store’s big annual sale).
4. I mainly sew quilts with it, but I also sew clothes, aprons, crafting projects, etc.
5. I sew once or twice a week for an hour or two, unless I’m working on a quilt or big project, in which case I try to sew every day.
6. I LOVE this machine! It was a big step going from a beginner’s mechanical machine to a high-tech computerized machine, but it has been a wonderful transition. The machine works WITH you instead of against you, and the features are all geared to make your sewing better and easier.
7. The machine is great for quilting (lots of cool quilting features, like a knee lifter), but it still has a free arm for sewing clothes. It is pretty high-tech and has lots of stitches and features I’ll probably never use, but it’s nice to have them for the future. Basic, straight-stitch sewing is a breeze, easy to handle, and very quiet.
8. I’ve accidentally hit some of the buttons on the side while I’m sewing, which is annoying.
9. I bought this machine early one morning over a weekend, and I got engaged that evening. Best day ever!
10. I would definitely recommend this machine to others. Janomes are known for their quality and reliability. This is a great machine for quilters and non-quilters (it has a free arm, unlike the Janome 6600). It is definitely high-tech but surprisingly easy to learn.

i have three brother machines that cost under $200. it would cost too much to fix them so i just kept buying a new one. i finally bought a pfaff. it intimidates me. when i had lessons; the teacher would say, “see your machine is wonderful”. it was wonderful while she was teaching me but when i brought it home, it never did what it was supposed to do. i want to stipple but i can’t figure it out. i want to purchase a small machine to take to classes. i don’t want another brother.

I have a Singer machine. I can’t see the model from here but I’ve had it for almost 10 years now and it’s been so good to me. I think my hubby paid $400-500 for it. I sew quilts, clothing, curtains, gun covers, dog beds, pillows, etc. I have the perfect machine for my needs. I have a walking foot for machine quilting – which is one of my favorite features. The machine I have is a worker–I sew at least once a week and it’s been faithful so far. The only thing that happened was my dog (in puphood) chewed the wire to the foot pedal – Bad Dog! I went straight to the repair man and he fixed my machine and wouldn’t you know there was a quilt store right there beside his store.
I’d recommend this machine to others because it’s not so expensive but has all the features I’ll ever need. I was tempted to buy a fancier model but it had computer parts and to me that’s just more things that could go wrong.

What a great idea! I feel like I’ve grown up with my machine I got it for my 16th birthday and it is still going strong 16 years later!! It has also travelled well with me being knocked around a few times. It is a Bernina 1008 and I love it! I also love the Bernina Artista machines but they are a little pricey for me, but on my wish list is an embellisher machine! If anyone has one I would love to see what you use if for!

What brand and model do you have? Janome 6000, Janome 10000, Janome 11000se plus 37 Singer Featherweights of varying years and models–white, green, tan, British(222).
How long have you had it? 1980, 1990, 2004, respectively for the Janomes. I learned to sew on a Featherweight and have collected them to get myself the best one. When I am done, I will sell the rest.
How much does that machine cost (approximately)? The Janome 11000se is around $8000
What types of things do you sew (i.e. quilting, clothing, handbags, home dec projects, etc.)? All but presently am doing mostly quilting. I started out with clothing and have done home dec and handbags. I just love to sew!

I LOVE Janomes. I do not name my machines. They are, after all, inanimate objects. I have warm-blooded pets for that. However, I have had the Janome brand since 1980 and I have NEVER been disappointed.
What features does your machine have that work well for you? I love embroidery so the embroidery features work well for me on the 11000.

I was able to buy a Featherweight with the case and all the attachments for $25 at an auction in Nebraska. It is a 1936 model so has the fancy faceplate. I love that machine with a passion. The one I learned on is a 1954 model and my Mom still has it.
Would you recommend the machine to others? Why? I would and HAVE recommended Janome machines to many of my friends. They are the inbetween in pricing and they are a good buy.
What factors do you think are important to consider when looking for a new machine? Whether it feels good to you when you are sewing, whether you are getting a lot of features for the price, what the trade-in value might be in the future (in case you want to move up).
Do you have a dream machine? I really wish I could afford the Bernina 830 and all its accoutrements – that is dreaming! At 65, I don’t think I will be getting another sewing machine (unless it is a Featherweight).

You forgot to ask an important question – How many other machines do you have?
You will get some answers that amaze you. Though most of us with more than 10 machines only use half of them regularly – but we have very specific reasons for why we use each one. For instance: one for heavy sewing, one for quick repairs, one for precision quilt-block piecing and one for serging across ends of all new fabrics as they come in the door and proceed directly to the washing machine.

I Piece my quilts on a 1917 National treadle, it is the only machine that consistently delivers blocks that measure correctly (a real “perfect scant quarter seam”) I make clothing and embroider on a 2005 Bernina Artista, I go to classes with a 1972 Kenmore ultraportible (like a featherweight but with zig-zag) I have a 1982 Elna for backup when the Bernina goes in for service (which is way too often for me) and finally have a 1904 Singer 27-3 for heavy-duty sewing (also treadle, no motor to burn up!) Oh yes a serger lives here, four more vintage machines, and a mid arm quilter on a frome. And I expect I will add some more vintage machines because they actually sew better in my opinion and I can work on them myself. Since I sew a lot, using a treadle makes it a little less sedentary and lots more peaceful. Once you try it you will never go back.

I had all these machines from 6 mo to about 1.5 year.
Previous I had kenmore 19365, 19010 and Janome 6600 – sold them all.
I bought the Berninas for $650, $860, $500, $400 and $900.

I searched high and low for all my machines – I was lucky to find most of them through Craigslist. I was super happy to find the 1260 for just $500 and within driving distance.
I would recommend esp the 1230, 1260 and the 155. they are all easy to use with computerized functions. 155 has the needle threader that I love.
It should be comfortable to use with all the functions you want.
My dream machine is a higher end Bernina: 630, 640 or the new 830!
I am very happy about this month and it’s focus on machines! Yeah.

My first machine was a White 2037 from JoAnn’s I bought for around $200. What a lemon that was. I had so much trouble with it I almost gave up on sewing. Then my grandmother surprised me with a Viking Rose (model 600) that she bought used. I have no idea what these go for, but I think a lot. I LOVE THIS MACHINE! I have had no trouble with it whatsoever, and my love of sewing has been revived! It has a lot of features (such as embroidery) that I have no idea how to use, but I’ll get there (when I have more time:) I mostly sew clothes for my little girl but am currently working on my first quilt. I think the most important factors when buying a new machine are that there is a sufficient warranty and return policy if you don’t like it, the store offers free classes with it.

~~I collect antique machines and use them for all my sewing. My primary machine right now is a 1930s Singer 15 treadle. For machine quilting I use a 1950s Japanese-made 15 mounted over a set of Singer treadle irons. In addition, I have four or five other antique machines that see regular use.
How long have you had it?
~~Been using treadles, for 18 years. I’ve had my two primary machines in use for about a year.
How much does that machine cost (approximately)?
~~Total investment for the two machines was less than $100.
What types of things do you sew (i.e. quilting, clothing, handbags, home dec projects, etc.)?
~~I’m a professional quilter and also do some historical clothing construction. I’ve had a machine quilting business, mostly finishing quilts for clients who piece their tops on antique sewing machines and want them finished on a treadle. I have never owned a long-arm quilting machine.
How much do you sew? How much wear and tear does the machine get?
~~At least 20 hours a week, often 6-8 hour/day.
Do you like/love/hate your machine? Are you ambivalent? Passionate? Does she have a name?
~~LOVE!!! The older, all-metal machines are just so much more reliable than most new ones. And treadling is sooooo relaxing.
What features does your machine have that work well for you?
~~Droppable feed-dogs and I can use a modern FM foot on them. But the treadle feature is really the main thing–FM quilting is much easier at the slower speeds that I can attain with the treadle.
Is there anything that drives you nuts about your machine?
~~No. There is NO downside to using an antique Singer.

~~The machine I’m using for piecing right now belonged to my BIL’s mother. I’m currently piecing a wedding quilt for one of her grandsons on it.
Would you recommend the machine to others? Why?
~~Definitely. For ease of use, durability and reliability, vintage Singers really can’t be beat.
What factors do you think are important to consider when looking for a new machine?
~~Get ONLY the features you will actually use. Too many people buy a machine with dozens of bells and whistles that they never use. If all you plan to do is piece quilt tops, you only NEED a straight stitch machine, so why get a machine that does 50 embroidery stitches? All you are doing is paying for things you don’t need.
Do you have a dream machine?
~~Sure do, a National Two Spool; it’s in my quilting studio in Wisconsin. We recently moved to Galveston, TX and most of my collection is back in WI, including my trusty Two Spool which uses a spool of thread for a bobbin. I really miss having that big bobbin! I had forgotten how quickly a bobbin runs out during a day of piecing.

I own 7 sewing machines, by far my favorites are my 1904 Singer 66-1 Lotus treadle with back clamping feet. It is a dream to sew on and very “Green” meaning it uses no electricity, and my 1914 Jones Family CS hand crank sewing machine. Neither have any built in designs, nor do either of them have a reverse stitch. Both are used for quilting and clothing.
The nice thing about these two machines is the simplicity of them, they can be maintained by me and oiled by me and they sew a wonderful stitch.
My other machines are a 1980 Montogomery Wards with decorative cams, New Home MemoryCraft 6000, 2040 Tiptronic Pfaff, Brother PaceSetter 6500, Brother CS-8150 for the Motorhome, and the newest addition a 1958 Singer 185K(green). My dad bought one for my mom ( in 1958) and that is what I learned to sew on. I bought it so my Hubby could use it as it sews very thick fabrics like leather and canvas.
As with any machine, a straight stitcher or the new more complicated ones with all the gizmos and decorative stitches. You must take the time to learn how to use it and all it accessorie feet. After sewing for nearly 40 years, I bought my Pfaff and took the free lessons and those lessons allowed me to use all the other machines to their full potential. Any straight stitch machine can free motion embroider, and do stippling on a quilt.
Also you need to take the time to sit at your machine and open the manual that comes with it and go from the front to the back and try out all the stitches. Cut some fabrics swatches out that are light enough in color so you can see the stitches and can write on. While doing that, take notes as to your settings and keep samples of what you sewed. Then when you want to sew something and you knew you had done it before, go back to those samples and the notes on them and set up the machine according to your notes and go have some fun sewing.

Hi, I have a viking 555 sewing machine. I really like my machine, it has a great variety of stitches, a strong motor, and is easy to thread. I’ve made a lot of quilts in the last 10 years. I’ve recently been making clothes for my daughter and myself as well as stuffed toys for my daughter. I think I paid about $900 for this machine 9 years ago. I’ve only purchased a few additional feet for this machine. These feet include the quilting package, which I use a lot. Most recently I purchased a 1/4 inch piecing foot, which I love and highly recommend. I selected this machine because it seemed more user friendly than the comparable Bernina. It had a large variety of decorative stitches, which I felt would keep happy for a very long time and I have been very happy with this machine. The only thing that I would change at this point is to add a few more inches to the working space of the machine for quilting. I think Viking has a new machine that has something like 10 inches of working space.
I don’t have a blog – but my sewing machine is almost 30 years old. It is one of Singer’s earliest computerized machines. My Mom used it for almost 20 years and then gave it to me after the birth of my triplet girls. I guess she figured with 4 girls I’d need to do alot of sewing. Since my girls have started sewing with 4-H we recently bought a Janome Magnolia 7330 – mostly b/c we have a shop in town that will service them if needed. We’ve had it 3 months and already my girls have made two winning outfits for 4-H, some other clothing and right now they are all making Moda Sweet Treat bags! Having two machines with 5 sewing helps!

Also have 2 Other Kenmores(25 years & 10 years) and a Singer Featherweight(4 years but haven’t tried it yet…)
Singer 99 is great for a beautiful straight stitch and is really well made…like to use it for topstitching…Story: This machine flew in a first class seat when I took it to college! I was in coach…
Kenmore 19110 is my everyday machine mostly for quilting projects…love the needle down option and the speed control which I am using to learn free motion quilting with. I believe it is made by Janome and it’s a pleasure to work on.
I would recommend the 19110 to someone who wants to do quilting…My first quilts were hand pieced and hand quilted because I was afraid of doing them on a machine without these features…
My dream machine would be a fancy Bernina but at this point it’s a far off dream and I will be content with my 19110!

My only machine is a Singer sewing Singer model 876, has many years the heirs of my grandmother. It is a very accurate machine, once I have repaired. My dream would be modernized and a new machine to quilt.
I have an ancient sewing machine. It is a singer just a step above the tredle machines. It was my great grandmothers. I love it, but it would be nice to display it instead of using it all the time. Plus it can only do a straight stitch, absolutely nothing else.

Well, I don’t have a blog, so I’ll just have to read the answers at the end of the month, but I’m very interested to see what you’ve got up your sleeves this month!
Brand/Model: Actually, I have 60+ machines: all treadles and handcranks. Singer, Davis, National, New Home, etc.
I’ve been collecting them for the last 4-5 years. Cost varies: Most expensive – $400; least expensive – probably $25. Oldest machine is 1861, newest is probably 60s model. I sew mostly quilts and rotate thru my vintage machines. I usually take a treadle to quilt retreat or national teacher workshops, and handcrank to guild classes. I love all my machines, and some are quite beautiful (great decals; inlaid mother of pearl) – and they all sew! I have machines that sew only straight stitch, some that use decorative cams/disks, some dedicated zigzaggers – so I can do most anything that a modern machine can do; especially with the various vintage attachments I have. I would recommend vintage sewing macines whole heartedly – they will still be sewing years after the plastic “wonders” are in the landfill. (and I can sew when the electricity is out – which happened at a retreat one year. I didn’t even realize what happened, as I continued to sew while others had to wait.). Buy a machine that works for you (and these just happen to be what I love); but it should be able to last many years. Another plus is that I can work on these machines myself – saving LOTS of money – to buy fabric!

I don’t have a blog, but here are my machines:
Singer Slant 404 – it was my mom’s, I learned to sew on it and I love it. I have it set up just to do ruffles right now.
Pfaff 2124 – this was my first major purchase, I proved to myself (& my husband) that I sew enough to deserve a nice machine. It was $1400. It’s a combination embroidery machine which I was not looking for. I hate it for embroidery (which is okay, I have a separate emb. machine) but love it for sewing. I bought it because it was a good deal for a pfaff and it has automatic tension which I like, my only wish is that it had the bobbin sensor that tells you when you are almost out.
Brother 750-D – This is my embroidery machine. It was $500. I didn’t like it at first, had some issues, I bought it used and got worried, but it worked itself out and I love it now.
I just sold:
Brother 180-D Embroidery machine for $100. I bought it about a year and a half ago and loved it, I wanted to keep it but then I had to buy another card for it and that alone was almost $100 so I parted with it!
Singer 7144 – I sold it to a friend for $50. I was going to keep it to teach my daughter, but I already have a spare and I was excited to help teach someone to sew again!
One thing I did find is that I really like having a separate sewing machine and embroidery machine. If you are looking to get into embroidery – my suggestion is to buy a used machine. I sew and embroider a lot at the same time, and you can’t do that with a combination machine!!

I sewed everything with this machine drapes, baby clothes, pageant dresses, suit coats, dresses.
I sewed tons with this machine and even wore out the contacts in 2 foot pedals.
This was the best machine ever and still is, only did about 6 different stitches and never had to be serviced except once for a new bobbin winder piece that I wore out.
Features were basic, straight, zig zag, stretch stitch and a couple of others, less to have problems with.
I bought this machine to take with me to college. My mother had a Singer Golden Touch and Sew which had all this fancy stuff on it and it was the biggest lemon ever. So when I went to purchase a machine I wanted the simplest I could find therefore less could go wrong and it was the best purchase ever.

Again I have sewed everything mentioned above with this machine and it continues to be a workhorse.
The Husquvarna brand is very reliable and I have only had it in for basic service one time.
I will sew over many folded layers of blue jeans without any problems.
My dream machine, I would like a computerized machine that I could quilt with.
Probably a Janome 6600 or Bernina Aurora 440 main factor being I cannot do quilting with my current machine.

I’m really waiting your posts during this month. I’m a beginner with the sewing machine, so all tips are more than welcome.
“What brand and model do you have?”
I have at least 2 dozen sewing machines, but I only use 5 of them regularly.
The machines I use regularly include a Willcox & Gibbs Automatic tension chain stitch treadle, a Singer feather weight 221, a Singer 128 hand crank, a Singer 15-91, a Babylock imagine serger, and I recently acquired a Babylock ellure plus.
“How long have you had it?”
The W&G is circa 1912, I purchased it in 2004, the featherweight I think is from the 1940’s, I have had it over a year, the 128 is another antique, but I have had it maybe 3-4 years, the serger is a year old, and the ellure plus I have only had for a few months.
“How much does that machine cost (approximately)?”
The W&G was $135 ( but prices have gone up, I’d expect at least $300 if I were to ever sell it).
The featherweight was $265 which I consider a fair price since I usually see similar condition ones getting at least $300-$400.
The Singer 128 was a trade with another collector friend but I’m thinking it would be worth at least $100, it is in really nice condition.
The Babylock Imagine serger was about $900 and included a work book, a bunch of attachments, and a nice black rolling case.
The Babylock Ellure plus was $1,500, but that included the masterworks lite software, a work book, a walking foot, etc.. as part of a package deal. It should have been about $2,100.00 for everything.
“What types of things do you sew (i.e. quilting, clothing, handbags, home dec projects, etc.)?”
I sew everything except quilts. Unless you count making a potholder as a very miniature quilt? I mostly make purses, but also lots of home dec, and some clothes, and alterations/repairs of store bought clothes.
I have sewn everything from a Santa hat for a live pet snake to wear, to a custom car cover for a hearse. I like challenges, and I’ll try to sew almost anything once.
“How much do you sew? How much wear and tear does the machine get?”
I try to sew for at least a little while every day. I find it helps relax me before going to bed. Sometimes it might only be half an hour, other times I sew for many hours. It depends on if I am making something just for fun at my leisure, or actually have a deadline…like needing a dress hemmed so I can wear it to a specific event. The Willcox & Gibbs treadle gets the most use, seconded by the serger, but I have been spending a lot of time lately with the ellure plus as I learn to use all of it’s features.
“Do you like/love/hate your machine? Are you ambivalent? Passionate? Does she have a name?”
I love most of my Willcox & Gibbs machines. I actually have 6 W&G’s that are up and running, but I only use one of them on a regular basis. No, most of them don’t have names. When I got to the point where I had over 30 sewing machines in the house and half of them were W&G, and most of the rest were various old black singers… they were lucky to be referred to by their serial numbers. I’ve never been good at names. I’m lucky I don’t have kids. Their names would be blank on their birth certificates. ;o)
I do have a non-working Dearborn blind stitcher that my boyfriend calls “the beast”. The guy we got it from asked me if I knew what it was, and I really had no clue other than it was some sort of sewing machine. I paid $10 for it just because it intrigued me. I think it was a good deal, now that I know blind stitchers cost $400 new! One of these days when I have nothing better to do, I’ll try to get “the beast” working. My boyfriend likes the machine, so it sits by his computer. Most of the time I don’t go in that room and sometimes I forget I even have that machine! It’s bad when you have so many machines that you forget you have some of them.
I like the featherweight, but I don’t love it. It suits its purpose as being a lightweight portable machine, but I think my singer 15-91 sews better. I like the 15-91 so much that I have 4 of them, but only 2 work right now.
The singer 128 hand crank I like for sewing outdoors. It is a strong machine that I have used to attach Velcro to heavy marine vinyl! All I needed was a roller foot, upholstery thread, and some schmetz leather needles. My boyfriend frequently has me do repairs to car covers and such with it, and these projects are too big for me to do inside, so having a machine I can use outside with no electricity is handy. I have been known to sew on a hand crank while sitting inside the back of the hearse .
I love my babylock imagine serger, it is almost idiot proof. I haven’t had the ellure plus long enough to test out all its features, but so far I like it.
“What features does your machine have that work well for you?”
That depends on which machine we are talking about.
I love machines that are simple to use. I hate adjusting tensions. Therefore the W&G with automatic tension is my favorite sewing machine, and for the same reasons I also love my babylock imagine serger.
The imagine has no tension dials, and it even threads itself. I also love the threading on the ellure plus. The ellure is one of those machines that is supposed to do everything, sew, quilt, embroider, etc… so its going to take me awhile to learn all its different settings, but the machine is smart. It has a lcd screen that tells me what foot to put on for each type of stitching, and even when the bobbin is going to run out of thread.
“Is there anything that drives you nuts about your machine?”
I don’t like winding bobbins on the singer 128. They drive me insane. I don’t like fiddling with the tensions on any of my singers, I only use the singers when I need to sew heavy duty stuff, or need portability or both.
“Do you have a great story to share about your machine (i.e., Found it under the Christmas tree? Dropped it on the kitchen floor? Sewed your fingernail to your zipper?, Got it from your Great Grandma?, etc.!)? We want to hear it!”
I haven’t sewn through my finger since I was 4 years old, and that was on my mom’s machine that she no longer has, so does it count?? ;o)
I have dropped machines on myself.
I was recently attacked by a staple on a treadle belt that I was changing for a friend. I got my finger impaled on the belt’s staple and attached to the machine! I had to pry about 1/4 inch of metal out of my finger, and yes, blood oozed everywhere.
I do have my great grandfather’s singer 15-30 treadle, yes grandfather, not grandmother. He sewed for a living. According to grandma her dad sewed shirts, and then later became a furrier ( someone who sews fur coats). My mom inherited the treadle irons and cabinet, but didn’t want the machine so she left it behind with grandma. When I developed an interest in old machines, I found out that grandma still had the machine at her house, but installed in a different cabinet. She let me have it. Unfortunately my mother didn’t want to let the cabinet and treadle irons go, so I just fixed up the head, bought a new belt, and installed it at my parents home. My grandmother and my parents thought I was insane for wanting to get that machine going again, but they humored me and let me do it. The machine is now with my mom, at least for the rest of her life. Not to be morbid or anything, but I think my mom will outlive me. She is just one of those incredibly healthy people who almost never gets sick or has accidents, so I’m thinking that I wont be inheriting anything from her. She’s going to be stuck inheriting my sewing machines and she hates sewing!
I think the sewing thing skipped a generation as my mother knows how to do all kinds of needlework but doesn’t enjoy it and rarely finishes anything she starts. She has a trunk filled with unfinished knitting , crochet and embroidery projects most started when I was a baby and she was playing bored housewife for a few years. I’m almost 40, my mother will be 67 this summer, she still works full time, and she still thinks she might finish these 40 year old projects some day. She has baby sweaters she started for kids that are probably having their own kids by now! Maybe the grandkids of some of my cousins might get some ancient baby sweaters one of these decades. Not that my cousins have grandkids yet, but they will by the time my mother ever finishes any baby sweaters.
“Would you recommend the machine to others? Why?”
I routinely get rid of machines I don’t like, so anything that stays with me for a few years and I use on a regular basis is one I would recommend. I believe in owning multiple machines as each serves a different purpose.
The Willcox and Gibbs is a chain stitcher that is wonderful for basting garments, and can do really cool embroidery. It also has the easiest attachments to learn to use. For example, I love the hemmers for the W&G and I never got the hang of the singer hemmers. I’d recommend the automatic tension models.
I like the featherweight for portability, it is the only electric portable I own that I can lift and carry myself, and do so with one hand as well!
I love my imagine serger, and would recommend it highly.
I’m one of those people who loves antiques and loves high technology and can find uses for both.
“What factors do you think are important to consider when looking for a new machine?”
With any machine you need to think about what things you already like to sew, plus new things you want to try and if that machine is capable of it.
I would read manuals online and see how easy or complicated the machine is . Most new machines have manuals on their websites, and many old ones can be found for free online as well.
Price & quality are important too.
Everyone’s budget is different and you got to work with it.
Also important if considering an antique machine is if needles and such are still being made for it. The W&G needles are discontinued, but I have a large stockpile of them so I can sew on mine for the rest of my life. I would not recommend a machine with expensive, hard to find, discontinued needles to anyone as their main or only sewing machine. I know that conflicts with my recommending a W&G at all, but they are wonderful machines, you just cant have one as your only machine. Its a great second or third machine to have. Your main machine should be something that needles are still made for.
I can recommend the singer 15-91 or featherweight because they use standard 15×1 needles and bobbins and other parts are still being made, are easy enough to find, and not too expensive.
“Do you have a dream machine?”
Yeah, I fell in love with some of the top of the line computerized embroidery machines from babylock but they take up way too much room. I’m also not looking to spend $10,000.00 ! I also wouldn’t mind a cover stitch machine.

Hi, I would like to buy a vintage singer sewing machine, and the local seller has model 99K (serial number starting with Y) and a 28K from 1938. 28K is more intricatelly decorated and is about twice the price of the other one. Both are hand crank powered, but the seller would put on an original singer motor and foot pedal free of charge (and also give me the original hand crank). Could anyone advice me on which of the two is a better machine?
Umm, I wish this month happened BEFORE I bought my sewing machine. My machine is ok, but it’s giving me some issues. Thankfully, I bought it at a good retail shop, and I can bring it back anytime for help / advice / servicing. If only the shop weren’t so far away. Sigh.
Wow! I was just thinking the other day…reminiscing about how when I was young my Mother always made us clothes. It was in the early 70’s. She & I and my Barbie doll would all have matching polyester outfits, lol. Eventually she quit making clothes for me as I got older, but she was infamous for just picking out some fabric and a pattern (or just winging it) and disappear upstairs for a few hours and emerge wearing some beautiful new dress! (She had moved on to other fabrics by then…no more polyester) I never learned to sew though. I wish I had. I have always been crafty, but never done any REAL sewing. So I was thinking the other day how I really need to learn…

I have a Singer machine from Walmart. Price was $79.99 if I remember right. I’m a really new sewer. I stare at the machine mostly, wishing I was good at sewing. I’ve made a couple of little things. Practice, practice, practice. And I haven’t done too much practicing. If I ever learn to be a little better, I would love to have a Bernina. But, I don’t need to spend that much if I don’t use the Singer. The only thing I wish is that the Singer didn’t come with more feet. I would love to have a walking foot.

Had it for 3 years.
Cost was about $1100.
Used for piecing quilts and quilting smaller quilts.
A good bit of wear and tear during the summer when I am home; not much during the winter.
Absolutely love it; couldn’t do without it.
Feature I love: Needle threader is wonderful.
Would definitely recommend it. Best sewing machine I have ever sewn on.
Wish it had a wider work area for quilting and wish it did embroidery, but maybe the next one.
Just make sure you sit and sew on any machine before you take it home. If the store offers classes, that would be the selling feature for me,

Lots of questions. I have a singer that I bought almost 20 years ago. I purchased it for $600 I think. I wanted one with a one step buttonhole. I still use it but I’m not crazy about it.

Oh, my goodness… I actually haven’t looked at this blog in months because (this sounds crazy, but hear me out) I get a little too much inspiration from it! I’ve got a janome which I love so much, its uber reliable, quiet and very easy to use, so much in fact I got my school to buy 3 when they needed to replace some old machines from the textile department. I sew about 3-4 hours every other day. I would say it gets a moderate amount of wear and tear, but I maintain it pretty well.
Do you like/love/hate your machine? Are you ambivalent? Passionate? Does she have a name?
I like my machine. It’s very easy to use and small in size. Her name is Betty.
What features does your machine have that work well for you?
All of the basic features of any machine – a good amount of stitches, easy to use, etc. Nothing fancy.
Is there anything that drives you nuts about your machine?
Nope.
Do you have a great story to share about your machine (i.e., Found it under the Christmas tree? Dropped it on the kitchen floor? Sewed your fingernail to your zipper?, Got it from your Great Grandma?, etc.!)? We want to hear it!
There is nothing super exciting to tell about it…other than I got it because I wanted to make my own veil for my wedding.
Oh, and I once thought it was possessed when I would turn it on and it would start sewing right away (turns out my fabric bin was on the pedal).
Would you recommend the machine to others? Why?
Definitely. It is a great sewing machine for beginners or for anyone who is looking for a straight-forward, “no frills” machine.
What factors do you think are important to consider when looking for a new machine?
I think it’s very important to look for a machine that is going to suit your specific needs, not just go out and buy one because it has all the bells and whistles.

I have gulp 6 sewing machines and a serger — I love them all (well maybe not the serger so much) … for different reasons. 1- i bought for the beautiful art deco cabinet ..and discovered later that the old black singer with many attachments actually worked! 2- is a white i bought at Joannes — it is basic but my first free arm machine 2 – I got for free an old Singer and an old kenmore (i spent $15 on the right case for it tho) — they are awesome workhorse machines 1- i got for $10 it is a japanese deluxe zig – zag and has more chrome than your daddy’s oldsmobile. and Finally i bought myself a bernina — which i am just learning to use but loving. — I’m gonna try the meme either on my blog or the forums

My husband got a job in New Jersey after grad school. We moved out here from the west, where we had both lived all of out lives. To say we had a little culture shock was an understatement. After the first six months, I was still terribly home sick. My parents came to visit for Thanksgiving and my mom took me out to replace the (very old) Elna that I had been sewing with. I was SOOO excited for a new machine that I started making things and selling them, I met so many fun ladies because of this that my homesickness all but disappeared! Almost four years later we are still in Jersey and loving it!

Well, I was at Target this weekend and really really really suffering from sewing machine withdrawal, and I said to my daughter. Let’s just see what they have. They were having a special on a Brother XL-3750 which totally fit my nonexistant budget. It even came with a walking foot, so I had to have it. I’m sure it will do just fine until I can get my other one back or a new Pfaff someday. It seems pretty good so far. Craziness!
I want to add a new machine to my life in 2010, so I’m looking forward to reading everyone’s reviews! I have a Brother machine now and while it’s good for the basics, it’s not really made for quilting (small opening to roll it up in), so I’d like to get a more quilting-friendly machine.

I have a Pfaff 7570 with the embroidery attachment. I also have a 1973 Kenmore that is just about worn out, but got me through high school, college, and many years of sewing. I also have a serger from the 80’s…still works fine!
My husband surprised me with the Pfaff at Christmas. I nearly passed out!
I have sewn since I was a little girl. I love it. I have made my clothes, costumes, wedding gowns w/all of the attendants, many, many gifts and done more alterations than I want to remember! I say that it’s my ministry.
I just purchased today a vintage singer so that I can try quilting my own quilts. We’ll see!
