Elizabeth’s Fabric Focus
Elizabeth from Oh, Fransson! joins us each month to share a new project featuring one of our current fabric collections. Don’t miss the PDF patterns in Elizabeth’s Etsy shop and her series of fun tutorials on Oh, Fransson! Many of you have participated in her Quilt-Along too; the series is chock-full of information and step-by-step instruction.
Today’s laptop sleeve project is available as a free PDF download.

From Elizabeth: Since Father’s Day is coming up, we thought it would be nice to feature fabric and a project that could be used to make a Father’s Day gift. The fabric I used is from Vicki Payne’s For Your Home collection of home dec weight fabrics. I just fell in love with the retro pattern!

The pattern is for a simple laptop sleeve with a flap closure. It’s very basic in concept, but it does involve sewing through a few layers, so I recommend using a heavyweight/denim needle and, if you have one, a walking foot. I used home-dec weight fabric for the exterior of my laptop sleeve, but you could just as easily use regular mid-weight quilting cotton.

The dimensions of the pattern pieces are based on the size of your laptop so, in theory, you should be able to use this tutorial to make a snug-fitting sleeve for any size laptop.

If you make this project, another handmade Father’s Day gift, or a project using For Your Home, we would love to see it in the Sew,Mama,Sew! photo pool.

Oh my, Elizabeth has produced another winner pattern and I cannot wait to make one for my new laptop! Way to go Sew Mama Sew for having another great project! Thanks for a great inspiring web site. Peggy
Neat! I’m gonna be making one or two of these!
I really love this and may just have to make one for myself. The fabric you used is so cute.
What a fantastic tutorial!!
Oh, this is brilliant. And so well explained – I will make one this week!!! Thank you!
This is such a great idea! And what a perfect way to use this fabric.
Fabulous gift idea…and super cool fabric choice! Thanks for sharing.
Another reason to get a walking foot! This is so stylish–I’d make one for my husband.
My mom would love this! Is it wrong to give your mom a father’s day present?
love this!
Thank you for this!!! I’ve been wanting to make something exactly like this for my laptop and now I can use it for my and my mom’s ipods
I LOVE it!!! I will probably make one for myself, as my Dad doesn’t have a laptop…. but I do, and I need a place to put it for trips and such! So cool! Thanks for sharing the pattern!
This is a great project! Thanks for posting it.
What a great fabric. And perfect for dad’s as it isn’t too girly!

Hey Thanks! -
Beautiful! Who needs a laptop ?
I want to make it ‘cuz it’s cute!
Good job!
Her blog and projects are always so beautiful. Her color choices and work seems is perfection.
Beautiful fabric and a great freebie pattern too! Thanks for sharing.
I just love that fabric, it is way so cool!
Amazing! I have been trying to find a sleeve to fit my laptop and had no luck. But now I can make one. Thanks so much for the pattern!
Elizabeth,
Thank you so much for using my fabric for this great project. You have inspired me to make one myself. Vicki
This is so great i think i am going to try and make it tomorrow!! I am so excited and so is my laptop
I’m thinking of using denier cordura nylon for this. Anyone tried using this fabric? Any suggestions?
Love the fabric. Great project like always.
Great project! Just in time, I really needed it. Thanks!
Off the top, I think you may want to add a little more ease. The cotton isn’t really “stretched,” but it does fit pretty snugly and I wouldn’t expect nylon to be as forgiving.
You’re welcome Vicki! Thanks so much for looking.
Thanks so much for this great pattern! I can’t wait to make a beautiful laptop protector.
Love this! Linked today…
HELP! I’m brain dead right now. I cut out 2 interlining fleece pieces for exterior fabric but do I need 2 interlining fleece pieces for the lining as well? If yes, need to go to the store pronto! Quick reply back would be appreciated. Thanks!
Thanks for a lovely pattern – it made a great laptop sleeve this afternoon. There is one important typo in the pdf that needs correction – when calculating dimensions of the flap panel, it should read “W + 1″ rather than “L + 1″!
Elizabeth,
This is a great pattern – I just whipped up the laptop sleeve AND the matching Kindle2 cover in about an hour… thank you so much!
