I’m fairly new to sewing, so I don’t have a big stash yet
I make sure to have enough stash in neutral colors and if I find a color for sale somewhere, I buy it (since there are no fabric stores around, that’s not often)
I buy thread specifically for projects, although I do have the basics in stock all the time – white, black, ecru, navy, grey and brown. And pink now that I have a 5 year old daughter!
I do try to match colours although it can be impossible with some fabrics which drives me to distraction! I often end up buying a new spool of a colour I already have because I get thread to match fabric when I buy it.
I don’t often use contrasting thread because any imperfections in your sewing are glaringly obvious! My top-stitching is actually pretty good but who needs the added performance stress? Plus I grew up in the 70s and have been traumatised by obvious stitching on clothes.
I tend to use the same colour top and bottom unless I’m sewing different colour fabrics top and bottom, then I try and match them it the seam will show. Such a pain trying to keep one thread showing through on the other side though.
I’m a bit at sea with this one as I’m new to quilting. So far I try and find a thread that suits all the colours, though more closely matched to the predominant colour. For soft toys where the thread might show when the seams are under pressure I’ll often stop and change thread to match the fabric. Which is a pain!
No photos – my thread is stored away in an old ANZAC biscuit tin, nothing to be proud of!
No I don’t buy thread because I love the colour of it (why not when I do with fabric? A mystery) and no I don’t invest.
I always buy poly-cotton thread, although after reading lots of quilting blogs I’d probably buy pure cotton for any future quilts. I think I might have a couple spools of button-hole thread and have inadvertently bought pure cotton before. Oh and a large spool of gold metallic machine embroidery thread, even though I don’t have an embroidery machine. Ok, now I feel a bit slack and unquestioning about my thread purchases!
My thread stash doesn’t seem very impressive, so this makes me want to upgrade!
I am just recently gaining a deeper appreciation for thread. I used to use anything that was the right color without any consideration for whether it was cotton, poly, rayon, etc. I certainly never thought about the age or weight either. I took a class on free motion quilting and was shocked about the amount of attention paid to type of thread to use so now I am much more attuned to that. My favorite notion is little plastic bobbin holders that stick down into the spool thread. It keeps the bobbin with the original spool from which the bobbin thread was wound. Thanks for the chance to win.
Wish I had a pretty picture to share but my stash is not so elegantly arranged in Ziploc bags according to color. It may not be attractive but it works. Fortunately I inherited my mom’s extensive thread collection (don’t worry; she’s not dead, just retired from sewing now that her kids are all grown up) so it’s very rare that I have to buy thread to match a particular project. That said, when JoAnn is having a fantastic 50% off thread sale plus a 10% off coupon I usually stock up on versatile colors like white, black, and navy. I tend to match my thread to the fabric but if the bobbin thread won’t be visible I’ll sometimes use one of those basic colors so I don’t use up all of my uniquely colored thread. I have gotten brave enough to start using contrasting thread for a little added oomph. In fact, I just made myself a fun reversible apron using a crazy combination of aqua, black and white, and purple fabric. I topstitched around the skirt using bright purple thread to match the accent bands. You can see it on my blog here:

I’m a very beginner seamstress, so I have a very minor thread collection! I bought one off-white/natural color linen thread spool when I went to pick out my first fabrics to play with, and I’ve made my first two “real” projects (an apron and a tote bag) with the same thread. Just picked up some $.49 thread at IKEA because it was $.49. So, basically, I can answer “no” to all the questions above because I don’t know anything about thread yet.
I’m afraid my thread collection and choices are pretty haphazard
I tend to forget what I have and tend to forget to buy matching thread, so I use whatever is on hand, whether it matches or contrasts 
I do, however, always buy Coats & Clark’s “Winter White” because it can pass as off-white or white and really goes with almost any quilting project. I also try to keep plenty of pinks on hand, since I have some little girls 
oh, my thread is in a box … I have 3 cats that LOVE to play with anything small and that rolls. Not nearly so pretty as this! would love to have it out to look at!

Thread…. well I’m a beginner at this all so I’ve normally purchased thread to match a particular project. I am in love with Guetermann. Maybe because it’s German and I am too. I just like the way it feed through my machine. I’m not really creative enough to use different threads top and bobbin. I’ve recently used a clear mono ploy thread. It worked great on the project but I had a heck of a time winding it on the bobbin. Oh and pictures of thread haven’t done that yet, but it’s a good idea.

Do you have any tips or suggestions about choosing thread? – For goodness sake, do NOT use your mother’s 30 year old thread! It fell apart (and was probably of low quality to begin with). I try to purchase quality thread – lots of cotton for quilting.
Can you show us a picture(s) of your thread collection? Currently it’s stored in two tupperware containers – larger one for cotton threads, and smaller one for poly threads. I’m trying to come up with a convenient way to store spools of thread with their corresponding bobbin (I always seem to have a lot of thread left on the bobbin!). I’m a thread junkie! Ever since I got my new embroidery/sewing machine for christmas my stash has grown to great amounts but I still need more. I normally buy gutermann because joanns here in town has a great selection and I can get the large amounts of colors I need. I usually select my colors via the “pretty” factor instead of what the design calls for because it’s my project and no law against experimenting. =) I normally use bobbin thread in my bobbin unless I’m quilting then it’s the same as the upper… it all depends on the project. My thread stash is in 3 big super satchel bin thingys that I picked up at joanns about 3 months ago and is full of quilting thread, elastic, cotton, polyester, little spools, big cones, and everything in between!

I have a pretty extensive thread collection since I inherited all of my grandma’s sewing supplies including her White Sewing Machine. Unfortunately, the thread is still in a box along with what I already had. Some of the thread is pretty vintage. I love the wooden spools! I try to match the thread to the fabric I am using but I use what I have and I’m learning that contrasting thread is a good thing
So, I haven’t bought thread in a long time but I will if I have an unusual color of fabric to work with and I try to buy the best I can afford.

** It is really hard sometimes; there are so many pretty colors. Most thread I buy is because I need a certain color or because there is a sale on verigated thread. I love multicolored threads for quilting.

** Only about 20% of the time. I usually have a neutral color in the bobbin or something that matches the backing or contrasting with it.

** Verigated thread is the best!! I love using a thread that changes colors as you use it. It is fun to see what the end results look like.

** I can’t. I wish I could. I have the coolest old thread holder that my husband found at a yardsale for me. I was so shocked he knew what it was. That was back when we were dating. Ha. I knew he was a keeper.

I’ve been so busy building my fabric stash that I have not focused on thread one bit. And I always get so excited to start sewing once I have a project in mind that I often just use whatever thread I have, even if I have nothing that matches. It’s had some pretty bad results, I’m afraid, and I definitely need to start being more thread-aware. Here are my answers:
How did you select colors for your personal thread collection?
I have a multi-colour starter-set that my mom gave me some years ago, still using that, and then a few select spools that I DID buy for specific projects but which will likely never have a use again unless I revisit those exact fabrics.
Do you always match the color perfectly to your project?
Nope!! But more out of laziness than purposefulness.
Do you ever use contrasting thread?
Yep!! Again, mostly because I forget or am too lazy to go find some that matches. I am not a very good straight-line-sewer so it doesn’t look great. Must either start buying matching thread, or learn to sew straighter!
Do you use the same color in the bobbin as the upper thread?
Not always – if the back fabric calls for something different. Though sometimes I get the tension wrong and then the wrong colour shows through a little…that’s no good.

I just pick whatever looks good (and/or is in my basket).

Alright, let’s talk thread! I have a small collection that I store in DMC Floss Plastic cases, they fit (even the larger spools) perfectly in the slots, I can see through the lid to see my colors and it works perfect, I have two of these, and I was just given a gallon bag of thread that was saved from the dumpster! Yippie…recycling!
When I am sewing clothes, I usually try to match the main color pretty closely. When I am sewing purses, I often do contrasting colors (I love the look!) If the project has large panels of different colors, I use the thread that I already own that matches it. I usually buy Coats and Clark dual purpose thread only because it is the easiest to find at our local stores. If I am sewing and my bobbin runs out, I will often just throw in a color that is close (especially if the seam will not show.) Then the next time I stop, I will wind more bobbin thread (which I HATE doing.) I have never really even thought about buying thread just because I like it, and I don’t have any favorites, I guess I am truly just utilitarian!

after a long and frustrating period without a proper working machine, i purchased a janome and have since made it my project to rearrange my tiny sewing room. i bought an inexpensive (& half off) spool rack to hang ‘my huge stash of thread’ on the wall. what i realized once i got started was that most of my thread was old polyester yuck.
answering your questions:
i’ve been gradually buying spools of silk-finished cotton thread on a per-project basis.
i do not necessarily always match ‘exactly,’ but i do try to match ‘perfectly’– that is, i select a color that contributes in a harmonious way to the end product. so, yes–sometimes contrasting thread. i generally do use the same color bobbin as upper thread. where there are big areas of different colors i would consider a subtly variegated thread, or use an intermediate color, unless i wanted the stitching to stand out. so far i have not bought thread out of love alone but once my stash of ‘good thread’ has grown, i can see myself doing this. i consider good thread a necessity — i’ve come to realize that if i am willing to pay a little more for high-quality fabric, it is a waste to sew it together with poor-quality thread. longevity of the final product is important to me. i have all-purpose cotton, some dual-duty, machine quilting, hand quilting, and one spool of green wool thread. i guess i bought the green wool thread on a whim.

My selection includes colors I love or what had gone best with a certain project. I don’t always match the color perfectly. Contrast is fun! If a fabric has lots of colors, I usually just go with the one I like.
I have gotten loads of advice on thread (ie: only use this brand, don’t use polyester mix etc) so I’m not really sure what is “right”.
I recently have bought bigger spools of thread from a thread shop, simply because they were a really great price (like $6 a cone!) but probably not the best choice in terms of quality. so I will probably have them forever.

I hate coats and clark thread. Stick with the good stuff. There used to be a chart online from on of the magazines showing thread under a microscope. Google could probably find it, it was a real eye opener.

If you care about the way your project turns out, spend a little more and buy good thread! You can still stock up on the bargain stuff for some less important projects or quickie fixes.

I buy as I need for anything but the basics… I always try to have big spools of white, cream, light grey, dark grey, light beige, dark beige, brown and black.

Less than 5 were for specific projects, bought with the fabric so I could match in the store. Most were… ooh, this is pretty! It’d look good on white!

No, I like to “stitch in the ditch” quilt oftentimes, and it’s only noticeable on the back, so it makes a great contrast.

Make sure it looks durable without a lot of wispy fibers hanging off.

Yes!! That’s how I ended up with four of about the same shade of lavender.

If this means buying more expensive or higher quality thread for an heirloom project, yes.

Machine quilting, hand quilting, all purpose, polyester, and elastic; from most to least.

These new Kaffe and Amy threads look gorgeous. What weight are they?
Some of my thread was inherited. Some purchased. Since I started quilting I find that I mostly use white, tan, blue, brown and black. Pretty basic. But, you never know when that plastic pink color will be needed for a quick repair or some such thing. My thread is stored in a drawer in the dresser that was mine as a baby. The dresser is getting a little tired (it was second hand fourty years ago) but still works fine for storing notions, buttons and THREAD. People laugh when they see the drawer, but it works for me. I have discovered that there are definate differences in thread quality. I don’t necessarily spend a LOT on thread, but I’m not going to buy junk, either. Quality fabric deserves quality thread. Anyway, I would love some new thread and the chance to explore new possibilities. Thanks.

I treated myself to a thread organizer for my birthday this year and had way too much fun organizing it all by color (and finding a couple duplicates, oops!). I love that my thread ranges from the stuff my mom put in my sewing kit when I went off to college to the fancy quilting thread I most recently bought (with everything and every color in between).

I love thread. I have almost as much thread as I have fabric and am always looking at more. I love the colors, and even though I have moved to using neutrals for piecing, I have a lovely rainbow selection of King Tuts and zillions of rayon. At least the thread out numbers the machines….

I usually use whatever is in the machine. I change the bobbin when I use it up. If the piece has multi colors I use whatever
I feel like. love to find vintage thread and see if it might still be good. Recently I picked up two colors of new orange threa at a quilt shop because it was hot and I was feeling orangey. like to try all types, especially
all organic threads and heavy weight threads. love threads that require milliners needles. do the thread companies have
“thread testers”? I want to market test new threads!

Ohhh, I love thread! I’m answering some of these questions here, and also linking to my blog post about thread.
I select threads by quality, job, and color. I like to use a thread with little fuzzing or linting that are strong enough to do the job. I like to match thread to fabric for construction, and use the same thread in the top as in the bobbin. But I love using contrasting threads for topstitching or decorative touches, and have used different colors and types of threads in the bobbin. If a fabric is multi-colored, I decide which will blend the best for construction and show up the best for topstitching.
I do buy machine embroidery thread if I fall in love with the colors, and I don’t think you can ever have enough pretty threads for decorative stitching!

Do you ever use contrasting thread? I rarely use contrasting thread. I think it gives a nice look but I am a perfectionist and get uptight if the stitching isn’t perfect when it is contrasting and more obvious!

I use the same most of the time unless I need to use up some bobbin thread to free up a bobbin and it won’t matter (seam will be hidden, etc). I only use different colors when I am quilting and want the thread to match the backing but the thread color won’t work for the top.

I have a really small collection…mostly just the basics, and then some that were to match projects I’ve done or want to do.

It depends on the effect I’m going for and how visible it will be, I try to get it close.

Sometimes, I’m really excited to try my new jean’s thread, its the same texture and colour of the stitching in blue jeans and since I’m short I always have to hem new pairs.

I would say, if its an important project to you or a gift, use good thread. It makes a HUGE difference. It was some of the best advice I got as a beginner (and I still am, so I try to take in as much sewing tips as possible)

Unfortunately I haven’t yet, although I’ve been so tempted, because my fabric stash is so small and I have a tiny budget for craft things so I try to do it on a as-needed basis

For gifts or something that will be getting a lot of use, I will splurge on the expensive thread. For testing projects and things like that, I don’t mind using a lower end thread, though if I had the money, it would all be the good stuff!
