Pajama Party!~ A Sew-Along

Chances are good that wherever you happen to be, the weather is changing–especially at night. The boxers and tank you were wearing to bed a few weeks ago suddenly aren’t quite cozy enough. Your child’s closet is full of his back-to-school clothes, but his dresser still holds last year’s too-short, too-stained jammies.  Whatever your situation, new pajamas are a great way to settle into the season.  We think homemade pjs are even better, which is why we’re hosting a Pajama Party sew-along throughout the month of September.

If you want to play, it’s simple.  Make some pajamas and share your experience.  You can do any of the following:

  • Go to the forum and discuss your pattern.  Ask questions, post your photos and see what everyone else is up to.
  • Share photos with our general photo pool on Flickr.
  • Blog about it.  At the end of the month we’ll ask everyone for a link to their posts.
  • Grab the Pajama Party button on this page and post it on your blog.  Link back to this post and encourage others to participate.  The more the merrier!

If you need a little incentive, we have a coupon for 15% off all the pajama patterns in the SMS shop.  (You don’t have to use one of these patterns to participate though.)  There are options for adults and children, boys and girls, gowns and pants–something for everyone!  Use the code PAJAMAPARTY09  when you checkout.  (Expires 9/30.  Cannot be combined with other offers or applied to previous orders.)

To top it off, we’re going to select our four favorite Pajama Party photos and award each of the winners a $20 gift certificate to the SMS shop!

If you’re in, let us know in the comments.  Ready? Set? Sew!

I have some wonderful fabric I purchased for jammies several months ago.
It’s been sitting in a bag because I haven’t found the right pattern, I’ll go have a look-see on your site!

I’m in! I love making pajamas!! The first year I really got into sewing I made pajamas for everyone on my Christmas list – I still remember my husband asking me “Are you going to learn to sew something else or are you just going to sew pajamas?”

    Oh,
this is a very good idea. I did pyjamas for my eldest daughter, and another pair is waiting to be finished. I”m going to some photos on Filckr in the next days.

  14. alison guinee responds:

This is the cat’s pajamas! (sorry I couldn’t help myself)…I have been wanting to make pajamas for my clan for a while now (even have pattern and fabric for some), but the making keeps getting moved to the bottom of the to do list behind more pressing commitments. This is just the push I need, and it will be so much fun working on pj’s knowing that I’m in good company! Yay!…and thanks!

  15. Whistlepea responds:

This is great timing! I just started teaching home ec and my first major project with my sewing students is pj pants!

  17. meg responds:

Yep. There’s a whole bin of capri pants in my sons pajama bin–not what he needs for winter! Maybe this will be the boost I need to get crankin’. :)

Maybe I will finally make the pjs from “weekend sewing” or “in stitches” out of the vintage sheets I’ve been saving!

  22. Helen responds:

    Ooooh…this is fun!
I’d really like to learn how to make some PJs, so I can make some as gifts for Christmas. My boyfriend can really use some new PJs too.

  24. Misha responds:

Count me in! I’ve been wanting to make some new pjs for months. This will (I hope) motivate me to actually start and finish the project!

  25. Erica responds:

I’ve been planning on making fall pajamas for the last couple months. This should give me the incentive to start!

  26. April responds:
    Posted: September 7th, 2009 at 9:08 am →

I’m in! I hate being too hot and too twisted up when I sleep, though, so I’m usually sleeveless or nightshirt even in the winter. If I make a nighty in flannel it’ll make it seem more wintry, yes?

  27. Karen in KS responds:
    Posted: September 7th, 2009 at 9:29 am →

I have some fabric and a pattern that I’ve been meaning to make for a while now. This is just the motivation to make it!

  28. Regina responds:

  29. April responds:

I have what I need for jammies for the boy child but no time this month to join along… ugh. I am doing a swap with some friends and need to get started on the Halloween costumes.

  30. Casey responds:

  43. Christine Bolin responds:
    Posted: September 7th, 2009 at 3:34 pm →

I could use some “new” pajamas. I usually sleep in a big t-shirt.

  44. beccy responds:

  49. Lea-Ann responds:

I actually bought pajama patterns to outfit the fam in matching PJs about 5 years ago! Guess i will be digging those out and playing along!

  50. Kate responds:
    Posted: September 7th, 2009 at 6:36 pm →

Hmm, I wonder if the pattern I bought three years ago will still work for my no-longer-toddler. And if the fabric I bought to go with it will only stretch into flannel jammie pants at this point!

  51. Lorene responds:
    Posted: September 7th, 2009 at 7:39 pm →

My two little ones definitely need PJ’s for this winter! I’m in!

  52. Bethany responds:

Grrrrrrrrrrrreat I just purchased fabric for all four of my kids to make them their yearly ‘fuzzy’ pj’s!! They get to pick whatever fleece they want!! I can’t wait to get started…this will help me to stay motivated to get them done (along with the other like 100 projects I want to do)!!!! Thanks…cool idea!!

  53. Rachel responds:

Pajamas for pregnancy? I’m thinking my current bedtime wardrobe won’t last for all nine months so I’m definitely in!

  54. Debbie St.Germain responds:
    Posted: September 7th, 2009 at 8:58 pm →

This sounds like fun. I have been wanting to make my own pj’s, so now i have an excuse to get going. I am going to try and make my own patterns from ones that I like, can never find anything I like that fits me the way I like, nice and loose and comfy.

    Debbie

  61. Kelli responds:
    Posted: September 8th, 2009 at 8:31 am →

Yea!! This sounds so fun! I always say I want to make pajamas and then never get around to it. I did make my kiddos matching jammies last year for Christmas and that was a big hit, so maybe I could get an early start and make the whole family some! I’m sure my husband will be so thrilled!! =)
–no blog (yet), but I’ll join in through the forum!

  62. Katie responds:
    Posted: September 8th, 2009 at 8:39 am →

I don’t have a blog but I definitely am going to put this on my to do list for the month. I think I will try some for at least myself and one of the kids I may do good and get everyone here some pjs made before the month is out.

  65. Gill responds:
    Posted: September 8th, 2009 at 9:33 am →

I have a whole bunch of pj fabric in 1 yard lengths so I shall be doing “patchwork” jammies with arms and legs in different fabrics…hmmn…it will need careful planning! Gill.

  69. Chase responds:

    Hello,

I just made my little a set of new jammies. Is it ok to post it? My patten is very simple. I have blog about it in my blog already. But would like to post some pictures in SMS filckr pool.

  70. Milica responds:
    Posted: September 8th, 2009 at 12:00 pm →

At least I know I’m not the only one with children wearing sad-looking too-small jammies! That summer sun caused my girls to grow faster than I anticipated! I can’t wait to make them some new PJ’s.

  71. Sonja responds:
    Posted: September 8th, 2009 at 1:38 pm →

I’m in! perfect timing I just bought a pattern for me and my girls. I plan on using old bed sheets. Thaks for the push.

  75. Amy responds:
    Posted: September 8th, 2009 at 7:33 pm →

  76. Lori Krause responds:

I’d love to sew some merino knit baby gowns

  78. Sonicka responds:
    Posted: September 9th, 2009 at 5:32 am →

This sounds like so much fun! I just went and bought some vintage PJ patterns off of etsy to try out. I also want to make PJs from In Stitches and Weekend Sewing. I can’t wait!

  79. Casey responds:
    Posted: September 9th, 2009 at 11:01 am →

I’ve never done a sew along, but this sounds like TONS of fun! Think I’ll give it a try!!! I’m not a great seamstress but pants are pretty easy!

  80. Lauri responds:
    Posted: September 9th, 2009 at 1:32 pm →

Hmmm…maybe I can actually use the fabric I bought to make pajamas for my girls last year, but is still sitting on the shelf! Or…maybe this is a good excuse to buy more fabric??? Decisions, decisions…lol

  81. Stacey responds:
    Posted: September 10th, 2009 at 4:42 pm →

I just bought material and a pattern for the kids pj pants.

  82. Heather B responds:
    Posted: September 11th, 2009 at 6:14 am →

I’m in the process of making 2 pairs of pj’s as birthday gifts & completing a nightgown for my daughter. Hopefully that will be 3 pairs by the end of Sept. If I’m really good, I might even get a jumpstart on Christmas pj’s!

  83. meredith responds:
    Posted: September 11th, 2009 at 6:28 am →

Last night I was feeling lazy, yet desperate for a project (a dangerous combination), so I used Blue Yonder’s bandana pants tutorial on 2 yards of flannel I got at Joann. My new cupcake pj bottoms have voluminous legs, which I adore, and a nice, elasticized waist, and it was gratifying to knock these out in under an hour. I recently got “Weekend Sewing,” so look forward to actually making some pj pants with a pattern next time.

  84. Taryn responds:
    Posted: September 11th, 2009 at 11:15 am →

I’m in. I saw something in my stash just the other day that made me think pajamas for one of my girls. This will at least make me accountable so that I’ll do it instead of just thinking about it. lol

  85. Kathy Marsh responds:
    Posted: September 11th, 2009 at 12:32 pm →

I’m going to try to join in. I need a pair of “nice” pajamas and a matching robe for a trip we’re taking next month. And if I really get into it I’ll try to make pj pants for my daughters for a Christmas present.

  86. Lisa responds:
    Posted: September 11th, 2009 at 3:29 pm →

I’m just about to start a couple pairs of pajamas for a couple little girls – great timing for a sewalong.

  87. Tami responds:
    Posted: September 13th, 2009 at 2:19 pm →

Perfect timing – I just bought a pattern & fabric to make my son some pjs last weekend. He was feeling a little left out with all the skirts I make for my daughter. I’m in!

  88. Chrissy responds:
    Posted: September 13th, 2009 at 7:08 pm →

I’m in! I just bought fabric to make my three daughters their annual Christmas jammies. I didn’t make them one year after two of my girls had started college and when they came home for Christmas I thought they were going to cry when they had no new jammies. This year, I’m adding my brand son-in-law (joined the family in May) to the pj list. And next year, I’ll get to add my first GRANDBABY! They’re expecting in April. I’m already planning!!!!!

  89. Jennifer James responds:
    Posted: September 13th, 2009 at 7:34 pm →

I’m in! My middle daughter could realllllllly use some new pjs!

  90. Malea responds:
    Posted: September 14th, 2009 at 2:42 am →

I’m not ready to sew some pajamas up from scratch but my son does have several pairs of pj pants that are growing too short. He hasn’t gained any width at all so I plan to take all the too short pj pants and cut them apart and rework them to make longer lounge pants.

  91. Haus Frau responds:
    Posted: September 14th, 2009 at 3:01 am →

A little late in entering (I just saw this blog post yesterday), but I am determined to make a nightgown or two for my little girl. :)

  92. Amy responds:
    Posted: September 16th, 2009 at 10:34 pm →

Yay! I just splurged on some knit fabric for this very reason.

  93. Tracy responds:
    Posted: September 17th, 2009 at 4:48 am →

I am another late entry, but I will commit to a night gown for each of my girls – cotton not flannel though as it is getting warmer here and the winter flannels are wearing thin.

  94. Janeth responds:
    Posted: September 17th, 2009 at 7:08 am →

My little guy is growing quicker than I can keep up with his clothes. Im sure he’s going to be thrilled with his new PJ’s. :)

  95. Kym responds:
    Posted: September 19th, 2009 at 5:02 am →

Yes. Just the motivation I need to make some new jammies for the little girlies. One girl has grown like a bean stalk over the winter, the other deserves more than just well worn hand-me-downs. Now to go pick a pattern …

  96. Tricia responds:
    Posted: September 24th, 2009 at 10:41 am →

I would love to play along!

  97. Tina responds:
    Posted: September 24th, 2009 at 11:03 am →

Sounds awesome! I love to make my boys pajama pants, and I want to make some for me this year. I have some great Robert Kauffman sushi fabric that I want to use! And the boys could use some new ones. I also like to make recycled ones from old pajama pants from DH. Even easier because they already have one seam sewn if you cut them right.

I made the cutest pjs recently using vintage sheets and a t-shirt from Target. I posted picts in the gallery. Here’s a blog posting: http://cleverkaren.blogspot.com/2009/06/vintage-sheet-pjs.html
