Disappearing fabric markers

    Disappearing fabric markers
    on: January 14, 2009, 02:17:52 PM
How do I get rid of disappearing fabric ink?  Its supposed to disappear with water.  I've sprayed it with water.  Rubbed it with a wet cloth.  The marks disappear but as soon as it dries they are back again but in a different location.
    HELP!!!

You may need to try a gentle soap.  I find that those "disappearing" claims never really hold up.  I use chalk...

When you spray with water, you may want to lightly dab with another piece of fabric. I usually use a plain white quilting fabric scrap to minimize risk of fabric-to-fabric bleeding. Be sure to just dab or blot, do not rub your fabric. Nowaways, I mostly use the air erasable Chaco markers which seem to come out easier.

You know it seems I have trouble with marking tools (including chalk) that are supposed to be erasable or disappearing.  I've definitely learned my lesson and test everything on fabric scraps before using on my projects.

Has anyone tried just the plain old washable markers/crayons, meant for kids?  I've always wondered how well they would actually wash out.

I've tried the fabric markers and they work very well.  My kids drew on undershirts which are washed a ton, and they haven't faded or washed away.  The tough part is keeping the fabric from moving while drawing.  I had to tape it down well.

I have the opposite problem in that my disappearing ink marking pens often disappear before I finish sewing! (I'm going to have to try using something else, although I love that the ink lines are so easy to see!)   As for regular children's washable markers and crayons, I can't speak for the crayons but as a former pre-school and kindergarten teacher have discovered that allthough "washable" items are easy to get off skin, they are not so easy to get off clothing!  They are mostly washable, but I find some colours leave a trace of pigment behind.  Blue seems to be a particularly difficult colour to wash out and many of my clothes have blue dots on them from where a child has accidently swiped me with a marker!  Perhaps an orange or yellow might be ok, but I would test it on a scrap of fabric first.  They might also behave differently on different fabrics, most of my clothing is cotton.

I use a disappearing fabric marker that comes with an eraser on it. It does disappear over time (like a few days) but if I want to lose the mark sooner, I can erase it. It works pretty good.
On a side note though, I find if I iron over the mark, then it's more difficult to get out.

I'm a chalk girl too.  Ink sets in if you use an iron on it...just a heads up.  I have a really great chalk pencil that is mechanical and came with a bunch of different colors.  I picked it up at Jo-Ann craft and I love it.
